Maybe there is another take on what Jesus said, maybe He was talking about the "poor" in Spirit.
There a lot of Christians who don't put their whole trust in God, He is the One who will provide all our needs.
God doesn't have a problem with us having lots of money, in fact He even says, ask and you will receive. Why would anybody want to take a vow of poverty, when God has enough riches stored up for us all.

Matthew 19:21.
Or is your 'Word of God' metaphorical when you say it is...?!
Thank you for admitting that your BuyBull isn't literal , then: and you know what that means, Tosser.
Matthew 6:24
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Luke 18:24-27:
Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
Remember: Stories of Genesis, Sodom and Gomorrah, Noah's Ark, assorted supernatural BS, and commandments to put people to death for a dozen stupid reasons are all totally literal... but Jesus telling you to be good to your neighbour, charitable to the needy, and responsible for your own conduct are all allegories told with a nudge and a wink open to interpretation.
Sell all you have and buy a sword: Literal, also you need to use that sword on a bunch of people that were never mentioned.
Feed the poor, clothe the naked, minister the sick, comfort the imprisoned and condemned, love equally: Need context.
These idiots are really reaching to justify following a Progressive, humanitarian, peace-loving, charitable, anti-greed religion (what Christianity is SUPPOSED to be) while being the opposite of those things!
Sorry idiots! If you can't follow Christianity because it's not like you THEN PICK ANOTHER PATH!
*GAH!* Ever since Emperor Constantine these idiots have been doing this! STOP IT! JESUS WAS A PROTO-HIPPIE! GET OVER IT!!!
@Passerby

And by "sword", Jesus literally meant "military-grade assault rifle".
Matthew 25
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Well, I guess you're right. Jesus sure was a dick to the poor, wasn't he?
Why are so many Christians and Fundamentalists poor as shit then? Don't even try to suggest they ain't praying for security of wealth or even that they haven't proved worthy of it in God's eye. I know many of the those without are more devote and observant than the rich pretenders.
This line of reasoning throws your own under the bus regularly. There are trailor parks that throw thousands into Pat Robertson or Jim Bakers coffers every week hoping that rich fuck will put a good word in for them when he's talking casually to God n Jesus. They really believe that shit so you think you'd give them a break on the constant dissing about their faith.
The Bible is the inerrant, literal word of God when it talks about the Earth being created in six days and homosexuality being an abomination. The Bible is a flawed work interpreted by errant humans when it talks about loving your neighbor; turning the other cheek; and the evils of greed, mixed-fiber clothing, and shellfish.
"There a lot of Christians who don't put their whole trust in God,"
Like those who looking both ways before crossing the street?
