Breaking News, Ted Cruz can count to four. No consensus yet on 5,6, or 7, but most experts agree that 8 is too high an estimate.
And yet, the devout Souther Baptist Jimmy Carter has used this pre-1954 Pledge of Allegiance:
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Which is still valid. So you know where his priorities are.
The flag represents the country .
You can't be both a Christian and a Republican.
You can't be both a conservative and a Republican.
Neither is possible, as they're mutually exclusive.
I'm a Christian first, American second, conservative third and Republican fourth.
I'm a Christian (ex-Roman Catholic) first, American second/Canadian second, conservative third, anchor child of illegal Cuban immigrant fourth, hypocrite fifth, Tea Party icon sixth, Republican (somewhere down the line).

No, Cruz can't count at all. But he can memorize words. No doubt Rafael "Kingmaker" Cruz was offset holding up his fingers and a bag of snack-sized Coffee Crisps as a reward/incentive.
Also, Ted, the correct answer is, "I'm a HUMAN first."
That'll cover everything else quite nicely.
That's fine Ted Cruz, if you were not running for a government role. The American government should be your first concern. Really you should be running for a church position not a government position.
It shows how this country has changed. In the time of John F Kennedy he had to tell people that he was a politician first and a Catholic second as people were afraid he would use his faith to change the country.
Actually, Ted, no one really knows what you are. Your tests came back inconclusive. But what you appear to be, is a walking colostomy bag with the world's most punchable face. Hopefully you'll be crushed by falling space debris & humanity will be rid of you forever.
I seem to remember not too long ago conservatives complaining about Muslims being Muslims first and Americans second and how Muslims never want to integrate.
At any rate, I'm reminded of that scene near the beginning of "Jesus Camp" where the family pledged allegiance to the Christian flag, not to the American flag.
Jack Kennedy recognized that Church and State were to be kept apart because that's how America works. While he was president, Jack Kennedy was an American first and a Catholic second. That's what made Jack Kennedy fit for office as President of the United States. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy.
@crealms
Well, actually that's because a long time ago Catholics weren't real Christians and people thought Kennedy would be more loyal to the Pope than America.
The same issue has never existed for Protestant Christians.
I'm a human being first, then Green, Humanist, and Canadian, in no particular order.
Confused?
