When I dream, I exist outside my body. Therefore I exist without my body. Therefore I do not need my body to exist. We Christians called that which exists without the body THE SOUL.

@arcturus: I don't think Descartes wanted to prove that he has a soul, he wanted to prove that he exists.
In any case, when you dream, you do not exist outside your body!
When I dream, I exist outside my body.
Would you mind if we just stop your heart while you sleep then? After all you don´t need the body during the sleep. We will even try to reanimate it at the time you normally would awake after your sleep ;)
[When I dream, I exist outside my body.]
So you're saying that when I dream that the boogeyman is after me...he really is?
When I dream that my wife has died in a horrible car crash, is she actually dead?
[We Christians called that which exists without the body THE SOUL.]
What a coincidence! That's what everybody else calls it, too! What are the odds!?!
umm..OBE's (out of body experiences) are quite common occurances in dream time. You arent really "outside of your body". No, your ego (or personality) is still inside your brain and you are having a hallucination.
Anyone interested in learning more can google "Lucid Dreaming"..that should set you on the right path.
When I dream, I exist outside my body.
Wrong.
Therefore I exist without my body.
Wrong.
Therefore I do not need my body to exist.
I'd be delighted to perform some emprical experiments on you to demonstrate the inaccuracy of that statement.
We Christians called that which exists without the body THE SOUL.
We critical thinkers call that which exists without the body THE DEAD.
When I dream, I often realize one of my senses is missing, usually smell or a sense of balance. Which makes me realize I'm dreaming, and I tend to wake up a lot because of it.
But you go on and believe your shit.
Since dreams are the result of activity in the brain while you sleep, I'd wager that you're still very much in your body while you sleep. Actually, you're not even "in" your body -- you ARE your body.
"When I dream, I exist outside my body."
Try dreaming without it, shit-for-brains.
When I dream, I'm walking through town naked, and it's really strange, because nobody seems to notice. And then I think, "Holy shit, did I leave the keys in my door? I'm not carrying them in my hand, and I didn't put them in my pocket, so where else could they be?" No, wait, don't answer that.
When I dream, I exist outside my body.
No you don't. Dreams occur in your brain. The rest follows your false premise, and can be dismissed on those grounds.
When you dream, your mind is free rolling while your body is in deep REM sleep. Does it mean anything? I don't think so; I don't really believe that dreams are anything significant. I can never remember what I was dreaming about in the morning so how can they be important if I always instantly forget them? I believe the persons, places or actions in dreams are derived from your immediate or long-term memories.
That aside, your logic is pretty fucked up, Garvan. You go from a normal physiological behavior into a metaphysical and theological non sequiter in the blink of two subsequent sentences. Bravo.
"When I dream, I exist outside my body. Therefore I exist without my body."
I hate all this bullshit about dreams having something to do with "the supernatural" or "the spiritual world." I actually thought this was the 21st century.
If you don't need your body, can we have it ? Lots of people would benefit from the organs that you don't, apparently, need.
when I dream I have wild sex. When I wake up, the luxury apartment and the cute woman have vanished. whats up with that ?
may I run your body through a wood chipper since you dont seem to need it ?
“When I dream, I exist outside my body.”
okay, let’s say i stipulate this. You dream of going to the Moon, we’l say some part of you goes to the moon. Sure. Why not?
“Therefore I exist without my body.”
That doesn’t follow. I mean, your hand can go inside the pickle jar. Only part of you can go in the pickle jar.
This is not a reason to think that your hand exists without the rest of your body.
Even with stipulating your first claim, it’s not evidence your consciousness persists after death.
"Therefore I do not need my body to exist.”
Can’t show that when all your experiences are supported by your living body. Come back with a report after you die.
“We Christians called that which exists without the body THE SOUL.”
You can call it The Princess Gladiola for all i care, you still haven’t supported your claims.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
