Re "A child dies when parents turn to prayer rather than medicine," March 27: I wonder how many children have died because parents turned to medicine rather than prayer.

Not as many as you think, and you can sue for malpractice...
Oddly that seems to be fucking frowned upon when your mumbo jumbo fucks up!
I just have to chime on on this one-
If I have an open wound and want it to heal, I would use Neosporin and a band-aid before I just try to talk to the bacteria and make them understand that I REALLY don't want gangrene and/or lose a finger or limb.
Saying a prayer is as effective as doing nothing and trying to rely on the luck of the draw to heal me.
As for the likelihood of children surviving diseases or wounds, there are still instances of children dying even while under the best medical care money can buy, although it happens with less frequency than it did 100 years ago.
It would stand to reason that prayer and doing absolutely nothing have the same odds of curing disease or casualties.
By relying on the child's immune system to combat the ailment they unwittingly put their faith in natural selection. Unfortunately the child was not fit to survive. I find this sadly ironic.
There should be an investigation though, just to see if the parents were indeed silly enough to forego treatment for prayer, or if there is something more sinister afoot...
I wonder if Bob Catalano gets sick and his ass is on the line, will he turn to medicine or prayer? If he is made to use prayer instead of medicine against his will, will he squeal louder than a stuck pig?
You're a fucktard, Bob. Next time you're sick, just pray and keep praying until you breathe your last, you stupid fuck.
Well let's see. Hmmm here in the United States where modern medicine is available to everyone the infant mortality rate is 6/1,000, while in Anagolia where it's almost impossible to get medical aid to everyone the infant morality rate is 184/1000.
Silly, that just means God loves America more than He loves Angola. They just don't have enough faith in Angola, apparently. < /fundiethink >
the case in question is one where the little girl was insulin dependent diabetic. They chose not to give her insulin. As an insulin dependent diabetic I can tell you she died in agony. Well, actually, she slipped into a coma before she died but before that she was not a happy camper.

But that doesn't explain why the God-fearing USA's infant mortality rate is one of the highest in the developed world. Depending on your sources there are at least thirty, maybe forty countries with a better rate, and some of the best rates of all are in the most secular Scandinavian countries.
Could it be something to do with the national state health-care systems they all have?

A child died you sick bastard. I wonder how many people would still be alive if it wasn't for your irrational religion.
Please, please, please tell me this is a misprint.
I'm one of the children who didn't die because my parents turned to medicine rather than prayer. I have a scar on my abdomen, but at least I'm still alive.
Everyone dies at some point. When is a matter of an outrageous amount of factors.
Many factors are proven through both science and testing to be ruled out due to medicine. NONE have ever been proven to be nullified by prayers.
That is a undisputable fact, not a matter of faith no matter where it lies.
Wait! Wait! Are you implying that there are children whose deaths are preventable but your god just sits on his arse and lets them die because the parents did not grovel and plead with him sufficiently?
Sick, evil fuck! You and your god.
This reversal is flying in the face of fact and reality.
Such a person should never be allowed responsibility for minors. He could not be trusted with their wellbeing.
As for the parents who failed their child by not getting medical help, it is arguable that they should be sterilised for fear they might engender more sacrificial lambs to sacrifice to their god. Make no mistake. It was child sacrifice.
None who would not have died anyway. The reverse, on the other hand, is not true.
It is tragic to realize that even in the 21st century there are people older than six who still believe in the power of talking to themselves - which is exactly all that prayer amounts to.
Better question:
I've yet to see one religion that says God plans will change because of your prayers yet you still insist they work. WHY?
It's obviously only appeasing yourself. Why pray over bodies at funerals three days after the soul has departed? Why pray over graves? Why live in a totally condradictary belief system?
I've yet to hear any Christian who believes Gods will is absolute and unalterable explain this sensibly. The best Fundies can come up with is: "If you don't praise and pray to God all the time He'll remove the hand of grace from and you will face misfortune"
In other words, anyone who suffers misfortune and tragedy aren't real or good Christians.
Parents who turn to prayer rather than medicine tend to give birth to many children.
Parents who turn to medicine rather than prayer tend to give birth to fewer children.
It's fairly obvious which group needs a couple of spare kids, just in case...
Much, much fewer.
Hooray for science!

medicine has a better track record than prayer.
If I hit my leg with an axe I want a doctor with a needle and thread to stitch it up and not a preist.
a girl died of diabetes complications when her parents prayed. One insulin shot and she might still be alive.
Children die all the time. In some cases medicine has no answer so you might as well try prayer in case anything is listening and cares to help.
A child that dies from a treatable condition (such as diabetes or an infection) while only prayer was attempted is just a waste. Sometimes God says NO is not acceptable.
Confused?
