Tennessee Republican state Representative Mark Pody's signature bill, the Natural Marriage Defense Act, has been green-lighted for a vote by the House Civil Justice Subcommittee next week.
The bill would declare all marriages of same-sex couples "void and unenforceable in Tennessee."
It would also declare any "court decision purporting to strike down natural marriage," including the historic Obergefell v. Hodges decision that found same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marriage, "unauthoritative, void, and of no effect."
Rep. Pody, who has been fighting to pass his bill since last year, in December told supporters, "I believe God talks to me in prayer," and added that God told him to file the bill.
A state-required fiscal impact report finds the legislation, should it become law, would cost the taxpayers of Tennessee $8.5 billion annually. Those costs do not appear to include court and legal costs. The majority of the costs would come as the withdrawal of federal funding of Tennessee's Obamacare program, food stamps (SNAP), and welfare payments (TANF).

Wait... so they're willing to sacrifice their poor and uninsured, just to stick it to same-gender couples?
I'd be more upset if I didn't know that the modern GOP never gave a damn about the poor in the first place. To them, this is killing two birds with one stone.
The real bad news is that black folks will still be able to eat in any restaurant they want to. But hey, it's gotta be Gods' will that Tennessee wrecks their state economy just so they can lean on people they don't approve of. If that state-required fiscal impact report(plus court and legal costs) comes home to roost, watch the next elections in Tennessee for a good chuckle. Unless of course you live in Tennessee.
Holy shit, is this guy for real?!
Mark Pody - when are you going to give it up?! You fucking LOST the Culture War! Just shut up and deal with it! And Supreme Court will block you every step of the way - just expect it right now!
Y'know, politicians usually have passed the Bar Exam at least. My MP, Karl Turner (Labour, Hull East) was a barrister; he knew the full implications of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 when he voted on it.
He talks to his constituents; they know of his voting patterns.
And as said constituents returned him to Parliament with an increaed majority just two years later , then that doesn't make it look very good for your case Mark Peapod; all the SCOTUS have to say - even before they throw out your 'Bill' - is to ask your 'God' to appear in the same room to testify on your behalf.
Karl Turner's constituents exist. The fact more of them do so - thus his increased majority two years after that S-SM vote, and they know he voted for that Bill - should tell you something.
We spend less per child in education than Mississippi now, we have massive poverty rates both rural and urban, we have one of the largest problems with meth in the country, so let's tackle the real issues here and make sure none of them damn homos can stay married!
You can go ahead and make a law that you will not marry gay couples unless they can stand on their heads for an hour, whistling Dixie. That's a little bit like going up to the Great Wall of China and posting a notice that their building permit has been denied.
Let's do this in words of one syllable....
You are too late. You can not change this now. Your new law (should you pass it) is null and void from the word go. You are full of shit.
@silly little dick
Stupid troll, or moron who has never known a gay person, no one knows, and no one cares.
Rep. Pody, who has been fighting to pass his bill since last year, in December told supporters, "I believe God talks to me in prayer," and added that God told him to file the bill.
So God also doesn't know how the US constitution works.
The guy is writing a bill that states it is unconstitutional?
I mean, most bills are somewhat unconstitutional those days, in the western world. The last french idea of taking of the french nationality out of terrorists has been designed to be repelled by the contitutional council. With 2 objectivs from our president : (1) "I'm tough on terrorism", and (2) "bloody constitutions, It prevents me being tough". Yes, he's socialist.
But he was not fool enough to write in the bill "This is intentionally unconstitutional". This Tenesse guy is. Waow. Just, Waow, Total Freak.
"Rep. Pody, who has been fighting to pass his bill since last year, in December told supporters, "I believe God talks to me in prayer,""
I asked god if he talks to you. He said he doesn't know you.
You know, it'd be fine if these representatives cited God as their guide on policy if they got stoned to death the first time they were wrong.
We'd be rid of a bunch of useless and destructive wingnuts that way. It's really telling how they are never held to this accountability.
It ought to be a criminal act to pass legislation which is knowingly unconstitutional like this. Especially since it's likely to cost the state $8.5 billion. And knowing that Tennessee is a red state, I bet that it's likely to pass no matter how much it'll cost the state.
And nullification doesn't work, you idiots. You fought a war over that 150 years ago.

"No, She doesn't. If she did, your head would cave in and your heart would explode."
Alan Rickman was awesome in Dogma!
Mark, gawd isn't talking to you. You're talking to yourself, which implies serious mental illness on your part.
I don't see how it would cost the state anything. There is no automatic trigger from passing a stupid law to cutting off social welfare funding.
Assuming it becomes law, which I doubt, It will work its way through the courts.
This is what happens when you elect moronic imbeciles. $8.5 billion is 25% of the state's total budget. There is no way they could absorb such a hit and continue to function.
Look on the bright side. When everyone in Tennessee is living in abject poverty they'll know who to blame and who to vote for next time.
@Frank
"Look on the bright side. When everyone in Tennessee is living in abject poverty they'll know who to blame and who to vote for next time."
Not necessarily. Fundies are known for screwing themselves over at the voting booth for generations on end. They could easily blame the results on Obama or Clinton or even Carter.
Natural marriage? You mean marriage between wolves or swans...?
On what grounds will they declare some marriages void and unenforceable? Due to the genders involved? That's gender discrimination, which is unconstitutional.
So, basically you're saying "Fuck the Founding Fathers for arranging a state that won't allow tyranny of the majority"?
As far as I know, Obergefell found that forbidding same-sex couples from marrying is unconstitutional. That is not the same thing as having a constitutional RIGHT to marriage. (Even though some “incels” feel they have a RIGHT to s-e-x
)
If he had said "I believe Lincoln's ghost talks to me" few would listen (hopefully). But having voices in your head called “God” is apparently fine.
Who needs federal funding, as long as no gays get married, right? Children starving to death in one of the richest countries in the world; what does that matter? Gays are ICKY!!! Whaaaaaa!!!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
