What is NOT universal is thinly veiled very contemporary political shots, endless reiterations of 'the ____ experience' which never shifts in tone or tale. What's a 'refugee' experience? ALWAYS a hopeless put-upon saint looking for a decent existence being stalked by villainous racist ICE parodies. Every...single...time. Is this the only possible refugee experience in reality? Not at all.
But it's the only story that Hollywood can tell.
It's why the term 'virtue signaling' came into being. In the new Toy Story we have to continually belittle and sideline characters because of what they represent in the 'real world'. Woody is a man, so he's a useless object of mockery. Buzz is a strong man so he has to be feminized. We need all the female characters to be the strongest, the smartest, the center of the story.
Because of cowardice.
Because the studio is terrified that people in the real world will complain about a movie they may not even bother to see. Because we need to show we aren't like THOSE people, so we need to drop those not too subtle references to pledge our loyalty, to show we're GOOD people.
It's a ritual, and it's emphatically hypocritical.
Because when it comes to certain people, the gloves come off again. Our heroes are broken, hapless, they've done bad things and even if they can't even atone they deserve a second chance because they're living, feeling beings with their own identities!
Oh, there's a fascist soldier who was probably brainwashed? Torture him to death and laugh.
Even Indiana Jones used to knock out Nazis. Nowadays if the character says 'THOSE people' or something to that effect he will karmically die a horrible death to appease the politically correct gods.
