Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms:

15. (1) Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.
(2) Subsection (1) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

As section 15's words "in particular" hint that the explicitly named grounds do not exhaust the scope of section 15, additional grounds can be considered if it can be shown that the group or individual's equality rights were denied in comparison with another group that shares all of the same characteristics except for the personal characteristic at issue. A personal characteristic is considered analogous to the ones enumerated in section 15 if it is "immutable" or cannot be changed or can only be changed at excessive cost (constructively immutable). Thus far, several analogous grounds have been identified:
sexual orientation (Egan v. Canada [1995], Vriend v. Alberta [1998], M. v. H. [1999] Little Sisters Book and Art Emporium v. Canada [2000]) This finding has led provincial courts (the Supreme Court declined in Reference re Same-Sex Marriage to rule on the issue as the government had voiced its intent to legalize them anyway) to find that laws against same-sex marriage in Canada would be unconstitutional. In Halpern v. Canada (Attorney General) (2003), the Court of Appeal for Ontario used section 15 to legalize same-sex marriage in Ontario.
marital status (Miron v. Trudel, [1995], Nova Scotia v. Walsh [2002]),
off-reserve aboriginal status/"Aboriginality-residence" (Corbiere v. Canada).
citizenship (Andrews v. Law Society of British Columbia, [1989], Lavoie v. Canada [2000])

Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the UK, and Uruguay.

These are the countries we are allowed to get married. Soon to include Austria, Costa Rica, and Taiwan.

Then throw in the countries where polling indicates the majority is in favour of it:

Cambodia, Chile, Czechia, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, and Thailand.

Not all of these countries are safe, by any means - looking at you, South Africa and Brazil - but most of them are as good as or better for us folks than your backwards little nation, where a minority vote can put a reality TV star in power and an attempted rapist can be placed on the Supreme Court against the recommendations of a retired Republican Supreme Court Justice.

I want to go to so many places around the world. The States is not on my list.

I'm a Canadian and we've noticed this American centrist propaganda for decades. Well , we who've been media whores and around for decades. Todays youth are really victims of it as it's been a steady diet of Americas being the healthiest, smartest, most ambitious, Charitable, tolerant, polite or complete bullshit lies like that.

It's like the fact on TV and movies, few are fat or live in lovely homes with less than 10 rooms. Even when they have menial low wage jobs. That maybe worked in the 50s where you could have a decent home with a regular job and every body wasn't an eating machine but since the 90s,,,, real events, sporting, parades big festival gatherings, you see the real state of America, where weighing 240lbs is skinny. TV doesn't reflect that except in cartoons.

And tv still is pushing this fantasy, it actually take a real news team not concerned with showing reality to see it so oddly enough, Trump rally line ups, Walmart disputes, right wing events and megachurches is mostly where you see it. This has been going on, a concerted effort, for decades to hide the overweight, ugly or cheaply badly dressed.

If that where you live (media) all the time, I know why they think like yourfriend. I'm a discerning media whore, I make choices but notice all of it. I don't like even one "Reality show" but I've noticed the bullshit.
