They will readily interpret the unknown in a favorable way even when there are clues to the contrary and if your interpretation promises them a way to escape death then they're going to be inclined to believe it. Especially in a time when stone tools are cutting edge (so to speak) equipment and fire is considered high tech. It's the same reason why children, though not born believing in Santa, will readily believe in him when told about him. Death and uncertainty terrify people and they will do whatever they can to escape them. If that means obeying your every word and turning over some portion of their wealth to you then oh well; they'll be getting much more in return after they die, right?
