Tory aide gave reporter ‘Jewish nose check’

Alex Brown said the staffer grabbed his face to 'judge my Jewishness'

A political journalist has revealed how a parliamentary staffer aggressively pushed his head to one side to look at his nose in order to check that he was Jewish.

Alex Brown, correspondent for The Scotsman, said that he had only been working in Westminster for a matter of days when, during a conversation about his background, the Tory aide “grabbed my jaw, tilted my head to the side to look at my nose and spat out ‘you don’t look Jewish’.”

Writing in the newspaper about his own experiences of antisemitism following the abuse of Charedi youngsters in Oxford Street earlier this month, Mr Brown also revealed how he was urged not to report the Westminster incident because it might harm his career.

“Her friends told me not to report it, stressing I was new and they could be useful,” he wrote.

Chicago Dyke March #racist thejc.com

The Chicago Dyke March Collective, which threw Jews out of its march last month for carrying LGBT Pride flags with a Star of David on, has been criticised for using a phrase popularised by Neo-Nazis.

On the Friday, the collective tweeted out pictures of the pop star Beyoncé, along with the phrase “Zio tears replenish my electrolytes!”

The term “Zio” was first popularised by the far-right, with antisemitic hate preachers such as former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke using it on a regular basis.

However, the term has since gained popularity on the far left. Last February, when Alex Chalmers, the co-chair of the Oxford University Labour Club, resigned, alleging antisemitism among the society’s members. The frequent use of the phrase “Zio” was one of his charges.

When Shami Chakrabarti published her inquiry into “antisemitism and other forms of racism” in the Labour party, she described the epithet as “a term of abuse, pure and simple, and should not in my view have any place in the vocabulary of Labour members, whether online, in conversation or anywhere else”. This recommendation has been adopted by the Labour party, and party members can be suspended for using the term.

The Dyke March collective initially responded angrily to criticism of their use of the phrase. When one tweeter described it as “reprehensible— Do you want to associate yourselves with the KKK? Because that's what you're doing”, the Dyke March response was: “Wow, trying to compare a group of queer people of color to the KKK, so f***ed up”.

However, when criticism grew, the collective deleted their tweet, saying:

“Sorry y'all! Definitely didn't know the violent history of the term. We meant Zionist/white tears replenish our electrolytes.”

However, as pointed out by another Twitter user, the majority of Israel’s Jews are of Middle Eastern heritage, rather than European – and that by identifying Israel as “white”, the Dyke March was “erasing” the existence of millions of Jews.

REN TV, commenters on social media #conspiracy thejc.com

Purveyors of antisemitic conspiracy theories are two-a-penny, but one Russian TV documentary has gone a step further than most.

Jews are responsible for the sinking of the Titanic, the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl and the terrorist attacks in the US on 11 September 2001, according to a short film broadcast recently on REN TV.

The documentary is an updated version of an earlier version broadcast in 2012, in which it was alleged that a group of “300 Jews, Illuminati and Freemasons” was behind the sinking of the British ship 100 years ago in order to cause an international crisis and take over the world.

The more recent film switches from past to the present tense and extends the conspiracy to Chernobyl, the collapse of the USSR in 1991 and 9/11, stating that the “Arab terrorists were unjustly blamed for the attacks”.

Commentators said the documentary was an attempt to revive the popularity of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a 19th-century antisemitic forgery created by the Tsar’s secret service, the Okhrana, to whip up antisemitism in Russia.
REN TV is a private network with an potential audience of more than 100 million Russians.

In 2015, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science described the channel’s documentaries as "the most harmful pseudoscientific project (for spreading of myths, delusions and superstitions)" and criticised REN TV for spreading conspiracy theories and distrust of science.

UPDATE: On Tuesday, we uploaded the above article to the JC’s website and Facebook page.

The story, although in its way a classic of its genre, was yet another article about yet another media outlet publishing yet another antisemitic conspiracy theory.
Clearly mistakenly, we did not feel the need to point out that the documentary’s allegations were utter rubbish.

Mistakenly, because within minutes of the story being published, the potency of conspiracy theories – and the seemingly insatiable hunger of some people for them – was demonstrated by a stream of comments on social media welcoming the revelations supposedly contained in the documentary and praising the Russian channel, REN TV, for its exemplary investigative work. One Facebook user wrote: “Hadn’t heard about the Chernobyl connection before”, and another commented: “Nice work, REN TV”.

Another added: “The only one that’s not news is Chernobyl but it is no surprise. And by Jews we are talking the Zionist Cabal with their Archon blood”.
The journey of the story through social media is an object lesson in how conspiracy theories spread on the web.

Gilad Atzmon #racist thejc.com

Gilad Atzmon, the antisemitic author and jazz musician, has claimed that the Grenfell Tower tragedy was the responsibility of “Jerusalemites” who were “following mitzvot”. Giving a talk at the Reading International Festival, he attempted to blame the tragedy, which killed at least 80 and left hundreds more injured, homeless and traumatised, on people who could be characterised as those who followed “commandments”. Mr Atzmon discussed what he described as a difference between critical thinkers – who he labelled Athenites – and the Jerusalemites who followed “mitzvot”.

He said: “How is it related to Grenfell Tower? Very simple. People who think things through, who understand about responsibility and morality and ethics don’t clad buildings all over the country with flammable materials. “But when it happens – it is we were following regulations, we were following mitzvot.”

He continued: “Athens and Jerusalem is not Jews versus goyim or Jews versus gentiles. “Athens and Jerusalem is thinking things through as opposed to following regulations, mitvot, commandments, laws. “The Ten Commandments is Jerusalem. I don’t need you to tell me I should not kill. Athens is ethics, Jerusalem is anti-ethics.” “Jerusalemites” were not necessarily Jews, Mr Atzmon said. ”It’s not Jews and gentiles because Tony Blair is not a Jew and he’s a Jerusalemite.”

As the 90-minute speech continued the Israeli-born writer, who has previously challenged Holocaust denial legislation, said: “Even the democratic process does not really matter. If you vote Labour, the polices are shaped by Labour Friends of Israel., if you vote Conservative it’s CFI (Conservative Friends of Israel). “The same thing happens in America, in France, and even Turkey is pro-Israeli now.”

He blamed “the Jews” for the collapse of the traditional left-wing politics that he said once appealed to him. He said: “The Jewish lobby is a cosmopolitan lobby. It has turned every person in the universe into a tribe who operates like a Jew. “Look at it – the gays are doing fine, the blacks are doing fine, the women are doing fine - but the Jews are doing really fine. They have a state, hundreds of atomic bombs, they have F16s, F35s [fighter aircraft]. “How many gays have a state, an atomic bomb, an army? How many blacks have a lobby that shapes American foreign policy so everyone is tribal like a Jew? But the Jews are doing way better than everyone else. “

Mr Atzmon said his Athens and Jerusalemite talk was inspired by the “very famous Jewish philosopher Leo Strauss, who is considered to be” the father of the neo-con movement – so he’s not necessarily a nice guy.” Mr Atzmon’s talk took place on October 22 with congregants from the Jewish Community of Berkshire and members of Reading’s LGBT+ community holding a protest outside the event. They were joined by Rachel Eden, a Labour councillor, who organised the demonstration, as well as councillors Daya Pal Singh, Richard Davies, and Sophia James.

Rabbi Zvi Solomons, of Jewish Community of Berkshire, said the Jewish community was “horrified” by Mr Atzmon’s appearance and “gravely disappointed that it went ahead despite attempts to have it cancelled”.

He described Mr Atzmon as “a notorious antisemite. He has promoted Holocaust denial, compared Israelis to the Nazis. “He is not the sort of person any liberal outfit should want to be connected to.” Mr Atzmon also played two shows at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, central London, on Saturday October 28. Pizza Express told the JC that the views expressed by Mr Atzmon ‘are not reflective’ of the company’s values. A Pizza Express spokeswoman said: “Gilad Atzmon is a musician who has performed at our venues for over 20 years, and his gigs have always proven to be very popular with our customers.”

Dr Maaruf Ali #racist thejc.com

The Union of Jewish Students has expressed its “shock” as more than 200 students at the University of Essex have voted against the creation of a Jewish society on campus.

As part of normal procedures, any proposed new society at the university must gain ratification by winning a vote on the Student Union website, open only to registered students. Recently ratified societies include the “K-Pop society”, the “Ted-X Society” and the “Pokemon Go Society”.

However, only 64 per cent of respondents have answered “yes” to the question “should there be a Jewish society?” which is currently being asked on the student union website, with 36 per cent – over 200 students – voting no.

A spokesperson for UJS said the organisation was “deeply disappointed by the significant proportion of students who have voted against the establishment of a Jewish society at the University of Essex.

“Jewish societies, of which over 60 exist on UK campuses up and down the country, provide a space for Jewish students to celebrate their culture and identity. The fact that some students at the University of Essex deem it fit to vote against that is quite simply shocking.”

Additionally, one lecturer at the university, Dr Maaruf Ali, has expressed open opposition to the proposed JSoc. Commenting on a Facebook post in the University of Essex Palestinian Solidarity Group which alleges that Israel plans to “expel 36,000 Palestinians from the Negev”, Dr Ali said that “the Zionists next want to create a society here at our university!”

Dr Ali, who lectures in the field of computers and electronics, has also shared highly questionable content on social media, including a picture stating that “50,000 Jews protest[ed] Israel” in March 2016 in New York, but that there was a “total mainstream media blackout by the Zionist mafia”.

He also shared a photo from Smoloko.com, a far-right fascist website, which claimed that one of the French policemen shot dead in the January 2015 attack by Islamist terrorists in Paris was actually “a Mossad agent live and well in Buenos Aires— a crypto-Jew in the service of Israeli intelligence”.

Another photo Dr Ali shared featured a Holocaust denial quote attributed to Edgar J Steele, an attorney notorious for defending white supremacists and for writing a book titled Defensive Racism: An Unapologetic Examination of Racial Differences.

The quote reads: “In all of German Occupied Europe, there resided 2.4 million Jews before the war, according to the world Jewish encyclopedia.

“After the war, 3.8 million Jewish ‘Holocaust survivors’ were receiving pensions from the German government.”

The quote continues: “Tragically, the remaining 6 million were lost.”

The Union of Jewish Students said it would “be in touch with the university regarding this matter.

“Dr Ali has shared blatant antisemitism on his Facebook, including Holocaust denial, Israel-Nazi comparisons and conspiracy theories about ‘Zionist media’.

“We call for a full disciplinary investigation and the strongest possible sanction for a staff member who has engaged in racist hate speech and discrimination. We are supporting Jewish students at Essex with the next steps they wish to take regarding this incident.”

Dr Ali has been contacted for comment

Conscience of the Nation TV #racist thejc.com

A group in Warsaw has been reported to local police after they burned and drowned an effigy of a Jewish woman as part of a rite to celebrate the coming of spring.

A video of the act, which has now been removed, was uploaded by a group called “Conscience of the Nation TV”. It was described on YouTube as an “antisemeeting”, during which members of the group burned the effigy and then 'drowned' it in the Vistula river.

As reported by the Wporst news website, the caption under the video also said that the effigy symbolised what is “ugly, cold and bad”, with one of the participants referring to Jews by saying “this mug [face], this big nose, so well-known in Polish history”.

The drowning of an effigy, said to symbolise Marzanna - winter – at the beginning of spring is a part of Polish folklore. Until now there has been no record of the Marzanna effigy being used to depict any form of minority.

The Polish Centre for Monitoring Racial and Xenophobic Behaviour confirmed that it had reported the incident to the office of the local prosecutor.

“During the Second World War one of four Warsaw residents died because they were Jewish,” the centre said in a statement.

“By imitating the Nazis today you have to be either a complete idiot or the last pig. But certainly not a patriot.”

Unknown man #racist thejc.com

Police are treating as a hate crime an incident in which a man threatened to kill a Jewish passenger during a “shocking” antisemitic tirade on a London Tube train.

The passenger, who did not wish to be named, said he feared for his life when the man shouted at him: “I am the next Hitler and I am going to kill you," gesturing with his hand to simulate a gun, and making a “bang” sound to indicate a bullet being fired.

The incident happened as the passenger, a solicitor who works in the City of London, was travelling home to Golders Green on the Northern Line

He told the JC that the man had got on the train at Old Street station and sat down opposite him.

The passenger said: “The moment he sat down he stretched his legs out to me and started nudging me.

“He then removed his legs and starting swearing at me extremely loudly.

“After about a minute of non-stop abuse he got up and went towards the doors and came back to show me a picture on his phone which said something about ‘Jews killing babies.’”

The passenger, who was wearing a kippah, said: “It was clear to me and everybody in the carriage that he was targeting me because I am a Jew.

“I was extremely shocked at being spoken to like that and when he approached me with his phone I was extremely scared and expecting him to punch me at any moment.”

The man got off the train at Angel station, the next stop, at which point the passenger left the carriage at the front of the train where he had been sitting and went to the driver's cabin to report the incident.

He said: “The driver told me that she heard the shouting and had alerted the police, who were waiting at the platform when we got to Euston, two stops further along the line.

“The police took a statement from me and another passenger on the train.”

He added: “I have travelled into work every day for the last three years and never experienced any antisemitism. I was extremely shocked that I was being spoken to like. I dread to think what would have happened had he had a knife.”

Chris Williamson #conspiracy thejc.com

Chris Williamson, the Labour MP for Derby West, has suggested Conservative supporters are posing on social media as Jeremy Corbyn supporters and then posting antisemitic material.

In an exchange with Conservative MP Nicky Morgan on Sky News, Mr Williamson said: “I have seen evidence of right-wing trolls, who are setting themselves up as pro-Labour, pro-Jeremy Corbyn individuals, on social media, who claim to be Labour supporters, and have then used that platform to make antisemitic, horrible and abusive remarks.”

He then accused Ms Morgan of using the antisemitism crisis as a “political football” before claiming: “The Conservative Party has official links with openly antisemitic political parties in the European Union.

“Antisemitism afflicts the Conservative Party.”

Ms Morgan, the former Conservative Education Secretary, blasted Mr Williamson for his remarks and repeatedly asked him if he backed Ken Livingstone’s expulsion from Labour.

Ms Morgan praised Labour MPs who spoke movingly about their experiences of antisemitism on the British Left at a debate in parliament on Tuesday.

She said: “People need to understand the extraordinary scenes that we have seen, including a truly remarkable speech from Ruth Smeeth.”

Ms Morgan went on to criticise “people giving the Labour MP Luciana Berger a hard time”.

She told Mr Williamson: “Labour members of Bristol West who made the Labour MP Thangam Debbonnaire pass a motion - or wanted to criticise her - for attending a rally about antisemitism in Parliament Square are nothing to do with the right. Call them out.”

At one stage Mr Williamson responded by banging his fist on the table and talking over Ms Morgan and also refered to her as “woman”.

On Monday Mr Williamson spoke at the Stop the War demonstration in Parliament Square and attacked Israel. He also applauded a band a performance on stage in Westminster by a guitar duo who performed a song with lyrics that labelled Israel an "apartheid" state and "a living hell".

Don Young #fundie thejc.com

An Alaska politician has argued against tougher US gun control by claiming that Jews would have survived the Holocaust if they had been armed.

Don Young, a Republican congressman for the state since 1973, made the remark after being quizzed on school safety by Democrat Dimitri Shein, who is running for his seat, Alaska Public Media reported.

Speaking at the Alaska Municipal League, Mr Young said: “How many millions of people were shot and killed because they were unarmed? Fifty million in Russia. How many Jews were put in the ovens because they were unarmed?”

Mr Young, the last remaining member of either the Senate or House of Representatives to have served during the Richard Nixon presidency in the early 1970s, is a prominent advocate for gun rights in his home state, the Daily Mail reports.

He is a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), and has previously said he believes that arming teachers could prevent future school shootings, a view echoed by President Trump.

Jean-Marie Le Pen #fundie thejc.com

[Bolding mine]

Robert Faurisson, the first Frenchman to be convicted of Holocaust denial, has died at the age of 89.

Over several decades he became his country’s most notorious revisionist, having contested Anne Frank’s Diary’s authenticity and defended French wartime leader Philippe Petain for collaborating with Nazi Germany.

His sister said he collapsed in his hometown of Vichy, the very city where Petain’s government set its headquarters during the war.

Faurisson was convicted numerous times from 1981 to 2016 repeating his revisionist comments and writings.

He was known for writing that gas chambers were “the biggest lie of the 20th century” and that there had been no systematic killing in Nazi camps, claiming the deported Jews had died of disease and malnutrition.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, who founded the far-right National Front party, said he had fought for free expression.

“Faurisson is a symbol of the way free speech has been criminalised in this county,” Mr Le Pen said in a statement after his death was announced.

“The State went through great lengths to silence Faurisson for decades.”

Vicki Kirby #racist thejc.com

A former Labour parliamentary candidate who claimed Hitler might be a “Zionist God” and claimed Daesh should attack Israel appears to have been reappointed to a leading position in her local party.

Vicki Kirby had been due to stand for Labour in Woking in the 2015 general election, but was dumped as a candidate in September 2014 after a series of tweets were posted from her account.

One message claimed Hitler might be the “Zionist God”.

Another said: “We invented Israel when saving them from Hitler, who now seems to be their teacher.”

A third tweet read: “I will never forget and I will make sure my kids teach their children how evil Israel is!”

One post was used to ask why Islamic State forces were “not attacking the real oppressors, Israel?”.

In a tweet from August 2014, a message from the account read: "Point abt Jews is that they OCCUPY palestine. Used to live together, now slaughter the oppressed."

Ms Kirby is now re-listed as the vice-chair of Woking Labour Party’s executive committee. The Guido Fawkes site revealed the news on Monday morning.
