(I shortened the article)
His wife had recently admitted not being a virgin when they married.
The hearing was told Mrs Goswell had informed her husband, after 46 years of marriage, that she was not a virgin when they wed.
It had a profound impact on him, and he said there were "three people" in the marriage and tried to kill himself in November 2007.
The four-day inquest heard Mr Goswell could not cope with knowing his wife had had a relationship with someone else before their marriage.
The retired property developer repeatedly stabbed her with a kitchen knife and clubbed her with a rubber-headed mallet at their gated bungalow.

Fundie because of the whole virgin hangup?
Unless this is an unusual form of senile dementia, I can't see how anyone could stay married to this type of person for 46 years. I mean, this probably was not his only egomaniacal quirk.
@ Mister Spak: That was really quite excellent.
I can see it as fundie because of all the Cult of Virginity crap I grew up with as a teenager. If a boy keeps being told he "deserves" a virgin bride, should hold out for that, should be a virgin himself, etc...well, no surprise if he grows into a man who takes news like this very, very badly.
I really hope we don't end up with more cases like this years down the line.
He obviously hadn't read his Bible. If she lied about her virginity, he was supposed to take her to her father's door and stone her to death.
So he *is* a fundie! Only fundies don't read the bible.
"I hope he gets life."
"Have fun in jail, cunt."
Nah, we're really soft on offenders here in the UK, we don't generally jail corpses.
Perhaps not fundie in this case, but the topic has been very much in the news of late, particularly in France.
This is why "re-hymenization" is a popular surgical procedure among cultures that put an over-emphasis on virginity for the bride.
Funny how that never seems to apply to the groom...
Oh my fucking hell. And people say women aren't viewed as property anymore. I see this attitude a lot in advice columns - okay, so few of them go to this extreme, but it's still there - usually from guys whining about their girlfriend/spouse's "sexual history" and how they feel jealous or inadequate. As if anything but an "pure" pussy is dangerous.
How on earth do these attitudes propagate? Are they contagious? How many of them will be sympathising with the murdering husband?
Difficult to imagine this behavior motivated without some kind of religious based thinking - at least, I have yet to meet anyone who thinks that virginity is so important that isn't religious. But I admit, there is no quote from him to really verify this. This isn't 'Fundies DO The Darndest things'.
- Obsession with virginity - Fundie
- Obsession with violence and death - Fundie
I have never met any atheists that are so obsessed with a woman's virginity that they are willing to kill their wife after 46 years. It has all the trademarks of a good little fundie.
OK, I'm going to analyze this in-depth:
Mental illness = Not fundie
Obsession with wife's sexual "purity" = Fundie
Belief that a man his wife had sex with before she even met her future husband is somehow compromising the marriage = Pretty damn fundie!
If it's not ok to laugh at this idiot because he's mentally ill, then we need to remove all the LoneWolf quotes too. LoneWolf's mentally disabled, but he's still considered FSTDT fodder.
Thats batshit insane..Hell, I like hearing my wife talk about her past boyfriends and she laughs at how smooth some of my come on lines were for getting in my past girl friends pants.
Honestly..virginity is a turnoff to me..it smacks of snobby inexperience and cock teasing. But I know not all virgin women are like that
So clubbing someone with a rubber mallet is the modern version of stoning?
What I wonder, is what made the woman tell him after 46 years of silence. Funny that fundies don't tell their boys about the 'bedsheet test' for virgins.
I really don't get it. Last year we went partying with my hubby's first love and her husband. People kept telling me I should of been jealous. Why? Because he lost his virginity to her?
Wow. I can only hope he offed himself, after.
Seriously, how can *anyone* be that insecure?
Not fundie, it could be religiously motivated, but it's mental health that is the issue here. Religion is never mentioned in the article so it's jumping the gun to say religion did it (although one could easily imagine it being as a result of his religion).
If he was unable to either live with a non-virgin or detect it, after 46 years of marriage, I wonder, why did SHE marry such an idiot?
Confused?
