Which founding fathers are those that people want torn down? Well, you know, other than the Sioux Nation wanting their land back, which Mount Rushmore just happens to be in the middle of.

So tear down that statue of Abraham Lincoln in Washington DC then: he was the first Black Lives Matter protester in America.

Well, your Founding Fathers were slave owners, just saying, because that's a historical fact. Not that I suggest tearing down their statues, anymore than all the ones of Captain Cook (the Hawaiians already did a demolition job on him).

Btw. another notable example of a non-Confederate statue that was toppled, though not that of a founding father: Ulysses S. Grant, a key general of the Union who actually fought against the Confederacy (but who does have a sketchy history nevertheless).

With the obvious exception of Confederates, I don't welcome the destruction of statues of every person who did some bad stuff, because that'd realistically be every person who ever lived and became well known. I exempt the Confederate statues from that statement because they were put up not to honor the specific person they depict, but rather as part of a historical whitewashing campaign and later as a middle finger against the Civil Rights movement.

I suspect people are tired of being told to pretend that everything about American history is awesome and that the Confederate statues weren't about racism, and the vandalism is simply one massive "ok boomer". In the case of Grant or Lincoln (not the best targets!), it's not even about a message, it's just catharsis. Though I wouldn't be shocked if some of the vandalism turned out to be linked to the Proud Boys, since there have been some confirmed cases of Proud Boys starting violence and right wingers trying to pass it off as Auntie Fa.
