Life in the US was good during the 1950's for white middle class Americans thanks to the rest of the world being busy rebuilding after a long and costly war and which had not touched US soil the slightest after 12/7/1941 and then it was just a tiny part of a small Pacific island and not US mainland!
Manufacturing increased as much of the Marshal Plan money went straight from the US government to the US corporations who then supplied the products to some foreign country, resulting in the white US middle class seeing their wealth and income increase in a way not seen previously.
When the 70's came about, much of Europe had caught up along with Japan and the US was no longer a sole provider of goods and this started to show itself in the rust belt in particular. The rest, as they say, is history!
