My experience with Atheists (which is very limited) is they are mislead to the word of the lord. They haven't been properly educated, therefore they have no faith. Usually their parents never took them to church, or never read them the Bible or did anything on the religous side with them, so they are confused.

Raised catholic until right after my first communion (age 11), at which point my parents converted to protestantism, which was a HUGE shock to my system, I can tell you. There were times when revivalists visited our church and the services seemed to go on for days, but the services were long even when the revivalists weren't there. I remember one particular new years' eve spent in the presence of twitching puppets writhing on the floor and sputtering endless streams of verbal nonsense. The service began at about 5pm and we finally left some time after 2 am.

Epic fail, sweetie. My folks christianized the joy out of me until I was of age, at which point (not knowing any better), I continued to do it myself until the age of 27 when I finally managed to extract myself.

I even TAUGHT others about christianity in the classrooms my ex husband and I helped build in the last church I attended.

The christian god and I...well, we've met. We don't like one another much.

Baptized RC at 3 weeks old (just in case something bad happened I wouldn't go to hell, because I was really really bad at 3 weeks old). My mother was Episcopalian, so every other week went RC then Episcopal. Went to CCD every Wed after school. . . blah blah... got married with both RC priest, Episcopal priest to keep everyone happy. My husband's family Episcopal as well, but he could care less about any of it. Got a job in an Episcopal Church office, (I liked it alot, they were very liberal and open, 2 women priests, 2 men priest, it was a big parish) Left RC and was received into Episcopal church, but didn't really go that much. Had kids baptized there, by woman priest, RC side of the family went nuts, didn't think they were really baptized, blah... blah, it got so tiresome and my husband and I were just doing it for the family, hardly ever went to church. It wasn't important to us, we thought the whole bible was made up anyway so we bagged it.

Actually we knew after 9/11 that blaming or praying to God wasn't really for us. We thought we should take the whole family the Sunday after and we absolutley got nothing out of it. We left at communion and haven't been back since. It felt like we were at a college lecture or something. Our kids are now 13, 16, 19 and they think for themselves. Haven't been to church since 9/17/01 and don't ever plan on going back.

I still have a connection to the church, I run a food pantry from the church, but it's a seperate entity. We pay them rent, so I can keep it completely secular. I love my job and my husband and kids help me all the time.

Sorry for the rant we had a nice family dinner tonight with a nice bottle of wine, so I have the gift of gab.

Believe me, Rebecca G, I have been educated in church, read the bible, went to two churches at the same time and I am not confused at all. I am very happy where I am.

You know, until fundies develop the ability to see into other peoples' hearts ain't NOBODY gonna' tell me how I'm doing on my spiritual journey, 'cause they haven't BEEN there, have they?
Before pointing out the speck in my eye to the world, take the log out of yours, because frankly the greatest enemy of christianity is christians such as you.
OK there are 1.2 milliard (American billion) people REGISTERED as being christians including myself, but I doubt if even 5% give a shit about religion, and people such as you only serve to create a divide that wasn't there in the first place.
I would tell you to go to Hell, but apparently you are already there.

Religion never had a chance with me. The myth I followed is Freudian, to wit: my Superego decided for me that religion is a barrier and not an enabler of human growth. The bible is nothing more than a recipe book for all sorts of mental illnesses for the individual, and an excuse for atrocities within the intertribal setting.

I had some fun with the Corpus Hermeticum the other day, and sorta tweaked a passage to reflect my take on the god conundrum:

"God is thinkable for us, but not for Himself, because the thing that is thought depends upon the thinker's sense of thought. God therefore cannot be thinkable unto Himself, in that He is thought of by Himself as being nothing other than what He thinks. But He is something else for us, so we can think about Him."

That is confused. I'm not, thanks for asking.

I was baptised, I was taken to church every Sunday and Christmas for at least the first 15 years of my life, and I spent several years being taught by nuns in convent schools. I remember one of the other kids in one of those schools being killed by a hit-and-run driver and we had a debate about how long it took his soul to reach heaven.

His sister was in my class, and the agony she was going through was probably were the first seeds of doubt about this religious malarkey were planted in my head. That was confusing - but I have never been less confused about anything since I became a fully fledged atheist. So I fear you have it all arse-backwards.

As with computers, my education in religion(s) is essentially self-taught. Believe me (pun may or may nmot be intended) Beckypoos, one doesn't require 'faith' to fully understand something. Just as it's best to have the boot drive on 'Master' on the main channel - and a 2nd HD as 'Slave', for your user files* (so as to remove the risk of said data becoming corrupted; also when & if one needs to do a complete reinstall, then said files are untouched), one can be an Atheist and be completely cogniscent of the 'mysteries' of Christian 'belief'.

And that's the problem - for you fundies, at least.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing indeed.

*- In the case of my own setup, I have just the boot drive on Master, and my two DVD burner drives on the secondary channel. My two internal 500 Gb HDs I have connected to a separate RAID card; I have 1.5 & 2 Tb external USB HDs for additional storage & backups (I back up religiously. Remember: there are only three certainties in life: Death, Taxes, and HD Failures).
