spoilerIf I said that it was important to “preserve the culture” of some primitive jungle tribe in the Amazon, everyone would nod in agreement. But if I say it’s important to preserve the culture of a small town in rural America, I’m denounced as a bigot. For Americans, the only culture we’re not supposed to preserve is our own.
