Why do atheists rely on blanket statements like saying nonatheists don't care about making the world better
It seems like they just overgeneralize based on the fake religious people that get talked about in the media like ann coultry and pat robertson, rather than from a real understanding of religion. But it's rather convenient that they never mention the people like Martin Luther KIng or Gandhi. Because since when has an atheist done more in terms of major social progress than say Martin Luther KIng or Gandhi to be talking like that?

I've never said Christians don't care about making the world better. I don't know any atheist who think that.
However, before you go making notations about theists being holier than thou, you may want to be advised that Martin Luther King and Gandhi both cheated on their wives. Also, Gandhi had a weird anal fixation.
"Nonatheists"?
You're missing some basics of the english language.
What's next, 'anti-non-a-theists'?
'Bizarro-un-anti-non-a-theists'?
You (not christians in general, not religious people in general, just you), complain about overgeneralizing, and then overgeneralize atheists?
Do you even look at what you type?
Wait a minute - this guy's simultaneously praising Gandhi and MLK! When I last checked, those guys were of rather different religious beliefs. Evidently for rtyew, it doesn't matter which god you believe in so long as you believe in one.
Brain_in_a_Jar: To the fundamentalist, the hierarchy looks a little like this:
1. Christians of the fundie's denomation - Saved.
2. Christians of other denominations than the fundie (except Catholic) - Damned, but easier to sway than outsiders.
3. Non-Christians - Damned, but at least they believe in a god. Now to make them believe in ours .
4. Catholics - Heretical Pope-worshippers, deserving of being written off as completely damned, but may be a chance as they still talk about God.
5. Atheists - Believers in nothing. Irredeemable.
So yes, Gandhi is lumped with MLK under "Believer" in that system. Rtyew likely doesn't believe in the same set of practices as MLK, so MLK is classed under "other denomination".
On the other side, because this people, even if inspired by God or their beliefs, looked for a logical ground and reason in their actions, they didn´t just spelt God, God, all the time. And for that, many of the "Christians" have slandered them unmercifully.
My friend, the problem is those of us over here are more likely to accept the last two people you mentioned as true religious leaders and great (if flawed) men than the first two people you mentioned and their followers are to accept them. They will overstate these men's flaws to minimize the great messages of these men of unity of spirit, mutual respect, and humanity. You have probably (unknowingly) hit upon the main reason for the existence of this site. These men wanted their religions to be religions of inclusion of all people of good will and respect for each other's beliefs. Fundies want their religion to be one of exclusion, blind obedience, and disrespect of other's beliefs. If all religions respected each other, and the rights of those who choose not to believe, this site would be a ghosttown!
Neither I nor any atheists I know have ever used the word "nonatheists".
They overgeneralize? You wouldn't do that, would you?
Alan Turing did quite a lot in terms of major social progress, and he was "rewarded" with chemical castration...
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
