It is a continuation of the liberal project of modernity which started in the 18th century but got trapped inside the national state because of nationalism. The goal is universal individualism and contractual only relations between individuals- no non-commercial (not chosen) community ties&bonds which would limit the individual.

Western Nations that follow The Enlightenment tend to be less war-torn, less awash in crime, developed nations with high standards of living, high qualty of life, low mortality rates and decent healthcare. Why is that a BAD thing?
Y'know? I think I got it! Frums, Bigots and Bigoted Frums WANT a "Crapsack World" where life is brutish and short. It's the only explanation for all this!
@SpukiKitty : They want a miserable, wartorn world because it's one where their ideas are justified, where the Other really is out to kill them and end all that they have built. The present day offers little in the way of assurance that they are correct, which is why they want to destroy it. They're a menace, plain and simple.
@Grey Rook
Eeyup! Just as I suspected!
....and in the end of it all....it's all about getting POWER! It's not about faith or morals. Just POWER! These are weak insecure people who don't feel right unless they lord over others. They're pitiful! I pity people who are so messed up inside that stomping on others is the only thing that gives them self worth.
This also explains DJ Stupid and his hypocrisy and why he doesn't just apply the "Jesus' Name Get Outta Hell Free Card" To Taylor Swift, strong women, LGBTAQs, Fast Food and Rock Music. He wants to restrict and lord over others whereas he gets carte blanche to do as he pleases.
Evil and evil actions deserve hate. Evil people deserve pity.
There is no such thing as society, only individuals
That notion died when Maggie Thatcher (*spit *) who said that removed it's inferior self from British society .
It still exists. Unlike a certain subhuman.
Norway proves you wrong: the only country to emerge out of the worldwide recession created by George Dumbya Bush, with economy intact.
'Be Excellent To Each Other'. 'Don't Be A Dick'. Following social rules.
It's why the sub relating to Dr. Stuart Ashens' YouTube channel still exists on Reddit : And that relating to Anc(r)aps, r/Physical Removal was physically removed from that HTML helicopter.
That's because, while being social media-savvy, satirical, sarcastic (but mainly about Poundland Tat etc & related subjects relevant to r/Ashens): those on that sub are Enlightened , thus social: as in civilised .
But you lot continue the way you are: it's helping the self -destruction of the Alt-Shite.
You're all bellends burning in your own lasagna.
Meanwhile, those on r/Ashens gets theirs out onto a tray... Nice. [/Steve1989]

Try the fifteenth century. At the latest.
Imagine being so recessive, even the 1700s are too progressive for you.
Seriously though. The US is pretty much the most individualistic country with other Western countries being collective. Libertarians aren't that powerful there that they can even begin to try implementing contractual relationships.
Really? IMO the Enlightenment was one of the greatest things that happened to Western society, in the last few centuries.
If you want to live in the Dark Ages...that's your problem.
@Titania : Both were a mixed bag, really. The Dark Ages (technically, early medieval period) saw greater freedom for the common person, and a bit more gender equality than the previous and following periods. The Enlightenment saw the revival of ideas from Ancient Greece (read: mostly Athenian Greece, as the various city-states had differing cultures) some of which were profoundly stupid or awful. It was during the late medieval period, which fell between the two, where human life was cheap, the common person was property of the nobility, witch burnings and inquisitions became a big thing, ignorance was a virtue, church corruption was rampant, etc.
(That's not to say that the Dark Ages were fun times. Far from it. Freezing cold winters, frequent crop failures, wars between people who wished to reclaim lands they were driven from centuries earlier and those who now lived there, knowledge kept hidden in fear that it would be lost if all the libraries were sacked, knowledge which *was* largely lost because the catholic church considered medical science a heresy, etc.)
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
