If you are saying that the simple fact of owning another man is unjust then you must also assert that Roman slavery was unjust, for they, too, practiced human bondage. As far as the mistreatment of slaves, I agree it is wrong, but it does not chang the obligation of the slave to obey the master.

Yes, I do think that Roman slavery was wrong. I think that any type of slavery is wrong, regardless of the country that it is practiced in. What's your point?

Good...

Notice that he says nothing about the obligation that the OWNER has to treat his slave like a human being by releasing him/her from bondage and to quit practicing slavery. An obligation to what, you may ask? Common sense, decency, and the human race.

Newsflash! Most of us still think that's wrong too.

Yes, it does. No man or woman has the right to own another. Period.
Hahahahahahaha!
These stupid defences of slavery to defend the Bible's position are hillarious.
After all if they don't believe the bible about slavery then their whole myth is fucked!
Thing is, it makes them look like heartless twats! - oh what a conundrum!
See how their brains (or lack of) work. He thinks non-Christians are only against Biblical slavery or Christians involvment in American history but that we all think it's ok otherwise. Wrong. Slavery is always wrong. It's never considered right in democratic societies except within church walls.
I have no doubt, given enough power they'd enslave humanity again
Right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Does that ring a bell?
Just because others did something wrong in the distant past, it does not make it OK for you to do the same wrong now, when we are, hopefully, more advanced and civilized.
Nobody has an obligation to obey another human being. We are all "created" equally, and we have all the same worth.
Owning a fellow human being is not a simple fact in any way. That is abomination , if ever there was one.
Notable point:
You vote for a Mayor, Senator or president
The church owns it's flock
Those last five words aren't mine, the possessive terms apply most the time in Christianity. Like "I belong to the Baptist church" As opposed to " I voted Democrat" or "I'm Republican"
Dude...really? You're saying this? Slaves have an obligation to obey? I know you come from a slave cult that gets off on subjection ideation, but no. There have been more and less evil forms of slavery, but speaking as a generality it is a very bad thing.
You should read about the Mamluks some time. Central-Eurasian-steppe originating slave army of Coptic-speaking Muslim Egypt, who kept basing their entire system on buying and training future rulers as slaves even generations after the coup.
The Romans weren't good for having slaves, but they were superior to some other slave-owning societies in that freedom was a very real possibility in the average slave's life. That's all any support for Roman slavery you may have heard comes to.
Roman slavery was unjust, why do you think acknowledging this is a problem?
Nobody has the right to own another human being, all people have the right to be free to determine their own lives.
And where does this obligation come from?
- Because the enslaving society says so? No, the rules of a society exist only for its members. A slave is, by definition, property, and thus no more a member of a society than a hammer or car is.
- Because your god says so? Prove that your god exists, then we'll talk.
Confused?
