Anonymous: Rushdie’s also a pretty shit writer. The Satanic Verses wouldn’t have sold 100+ copies if he didn’t include islamophobic hate speech to get western audiences to champion him. Notice how nobody talks about any of his other books lol. Obviously he shouldn’t have been stabbed, but he made himself a puppet for the west, so he can’t be truly surprised when that comes with consequences. My entire point here was that his entire association to fame is rooted in Islamophia. He isn’t a good writer and all this support he’s getting from is right wing Tumblr kids who have never read his work.

I just can’t stand it when authors, comedians, actors etc say fucked up shit and then hide behind their craft like it somehow gives them immunity form consequences.

That’s not what happened. He was targeted by Muslim counterparts to Fred Phelps & co, the likes who’d label a picture of the prophet Muhammed as Islamophobic hate worthy of the death penalty.

Like if someone should write a novel about a group of archeologists unearthing a book from late first century AD, finding it’s a collection of stories that many believed to be true, but were really made up.

One section in it says that the story of “Jesus Christ” was cobbled together from unrelated stories about several Middle Eastern itinerant preachers thought to have a special connection to God allowing them to perform miracles.

And after this novel is released, Christian fundies start going on and on about how the author should be put to death as a blasphemer.

The consequences were because of the advocacy of violence, like this, by people who cannot accept that flawed humans and ideologies can be criticized or mocked. It confronts them to the reality that it's also flawed humans who must be in the business of "defending God". If the deity could do it by itself, you would also have faith that it could handle the situation without human mobs or terrorism. Then since a Fatwa was issued by a political authority, it recalls the fact that it's human politics weaponizing religion for their purposes, manipulation, power justification, etc.

Someone I know has that book on their shelves. He bought such and read it because he merely wanted to see if all the 'claims' about such were correct. He merely said that it reads much like an extended episode of "The Twilight Zone": he certainly found nothing remotely offensive about such. Who is he? My physician:

A Muslim.

People have the duty to protest when people try to organise a worldwide campaign of assassination against someone over mere ideas.

Obviously neither these two fellows nor the old Ajatollah actually read the novel.
