Montrose is loosely based on Galois, who died in a duel, and Boole, who was regarded by the Londoners as something of a country cousin.
I selected a Texan precisely because Leftists hate Cowboys, and for good reason: the Cowboy is American, free, individualist, religious, and proud — and I do not mean proud enough to flaunt sexual perversions in front of schoolchildren, which is how Leftists use the word ‘proud’, but I mean both ambitious and filled with a sense of self worth.
The Leftists are so proud of themselves for not being bigots, when in reality they are the only bigots left in the American landscape. Give a character an accent, and the Leftist brain cannot contain the paradox of how a character can be smart or heroic and yet talk like the hated “Other”, that boogeyman of all Leftist nursery-tales, the dread and dreaded Hayseed.

In fact, the cowboy was an illiterate, itinerant and imprudent agricultural worker, often black or Hispanic (because no one else could be hired for the kind of wages the cowboys were paid), unchurched and, when in town, most often drunk and in the company of a "soiled dove."
So little was thought of them, most cowboys were called "saddle bums" or "saddle tramps" by the townies.
What universe does this Wright goof occupy, anyway?
"the Cowboy is American, free, individualist, religious, and proud"
- No, that is the Hollywood ideal of a cowboy. #1577513's description is far more in line with historical reality. Your affection for images crafted by a worldly industry speaks volumes about your spiritual deficits John.
I'll rewrite Mr. Wrong's bit to reflect the truth:
I selected a Texan precisely because Leftists hate Cowboys, and for good reason: the Cowboy is drunken, dirty, uneducated, unchurched, and libidinous and I do mean libidinous enough to flaunt sexual perversions with those "soiled doves" in the saloons & brothels, which is how anyone would use the word "libidinous", lowly, libidinous, uneducated, unchurched and often filled with a lack of self worth.
A cowboy? A paid handyman who herds cows and this is somehow your hero? A cowboy, per definition of the job, is often rather under educated and not exactly someone I would use for anything but herding cows!
As they say in Texas about people like Wright: "All hat and no cow!"
"Give a character an accent, and the Leftist brain cannot contain the paradox of how a character can be smart or heroic and yet talk like the hated “Other”, that boogeyman of all Leftist nursery-tales, the dread and dreaded Hayseed."
I guess that's why we voted for Clinton in a landslide, twice.
Maybe if your part of the country would promote more equally intelligent, unbigoted and non-batshit people up through the ranks, we'd vote for more "characters with accents".
"The Leftists are so proud of themselves for not being bigots, when in reality they are the only bigots left in the American landscape"
Unless you count misogynists, homophobes, racists...
Not all Texans are Cowboys. Smart and heroic Texans? Well, there's LBJ, Molly Ivins, Wendy Davis, the Dixie Chicks...
As much as I hate prejudice and stereotyping, I have to admit that whenever mind-numbing ignorance and bigotry come more often than not from the mouths of people with a particular accent, I can't help but automatically assume that someone with that accent is going to follow the general pattern.
Cowboy
People that herded or drove cattle
Shepards
In many countries outside and before America this was a regular practice, nothing about American cowboys is special or unique.
It's all fiction losers. Cattlebeast were IMPORTED to your country along with the horses and men.
But this is typical fundie bullshit pretending you're something new and different that sprung from myth over 1900 nyears ago and never seen in Europe or Australia or ANYWHERE else.
You guys never invented cattle drives, cowboys, democracy, justice or even religion. You're all just pale copies claiming the invention of guns, hunting, free speech and freedom.
Hey, Yank, It's not new, you followed the idea and it's been done better elsewhere.
American exeptionalism.
American bullshit.
Apparently Neo-Confederates and Neo-Nazis are either A) not American, a concept I actually rather like, B) not bigoted by his definition, which is hilariously upside-down, or C) he thinks they're imaginary.
Like everyone else said, but growing up and living in Texas I must say this:
To assume everyone in Texas is a "cowboy" or "cowgirl" type is not only ignorant, but can also be offensive to some people.
Also, growing up and having to learn Texas history, the daily life of cowboy was described as a less than glamorous life as opposed what is seen in the media. Cowboys worked long hours (virtually 24/7 until they reached their destination), had to endure exposure to the elements as well as many job hazards that could disable or kill you, and were under constant supervision of ranch owners and the managers the ranch owners hired. The ranch owners or the managers could legally impose harsh punishment for various offenses. For example, if a cowboy was caught stealing livestock, they could be hanged.
Finally, most left leaning people I know don't really believe that people from Texas or cowboys are dumb or have impaired cognitive function capabilities. They do, however, sometimes mock the right for their apathy for objective education and learning that can be easily accessed to everyone.
Everyone else has already said that real cowboys had very little in common with film cowboys, so I'll tackle something else...
How can you be individualist and religious at the same time? Religion is obeying some deity without questioning he/she/it, adhering to what the pastor (or other representative) says, and following ancient rules that don't make sense anymore. Plus, pride is a deadly sin.
The people marching in Pride Parades are also filled with a sense of self-worth; that's why they're there, and about half of them are heterosexual. But, as everyone sane knows, there's just as much sexual perversion in heterosexuality as there is in homosexuality, and neither should be flaunted in front of school children, actually. Only kissing and hugging should be done in public, moderately please.
@J. James:
or C) he thinks they're imaginary.
Well, he thinks that the fictional portrait of cowboys was real, it’s not that far-fetched that he would think real people are imaginary.
@Swede :
You should be an individualist, except if you are individual in some form that I don’t like.[/John C. Wright]
Cowboys american? ORLY?

Marty: Doc, I finally feel like an "american" dressing like a cowboy.
Doc: Marty, I traveled back in time and I realized it's not American tradition, but Mexican.
Marty: Noooooo! But why, Doc? Why?
Doc: It actually originated in Northern Mexico and Jalisco. It comes from the charro, which comes from Salamanca, Spain. When the anglo-saxons expanded west, english traditions accepted the Mexican ones. Look! A town in Sonora! It's exactly like the town we're just right now.
"Mad Dog" Tannen: You mean cowboys are not "americans"? Don't be a douche, Clint Eastwood!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
