The masses become more corrupt, perverse, confused. They are ever more robotized, subject to insidious forces that lead them. They worship shrewd, cunning leaders who parade them straight into the calamity just around the bend.

Basic human anxiety has evolved through different stages: first there is natural self-consciousness, and later comes guilt, fear, confusion, and so on. In this text, we are focusing on two of these symptoms: self-consciousness and guilt.
<...>
Unable or unwilling to understand the reason for your first anxiety, you add sin to sin by striving to make your present nature acceptable. The more you accept your present fallen state, the more corrupt you become, as you solicit and get support for it.
<...>
It’s safe to say that you have spent your whole existence trying to make yourself confident, comfortable and acceptable. You have rationalized, excused, repressed and explained away your embarrassment with a myriad of scientific rationale.

A particularly outstanding example of “scientific” rationale is the attempt to prove we have descended from the same common ancestor as the ape. If we swallow this line, then we don’t have to feel guilt for our dark desires.

When people get the proof they need, they go “ape” and make a religion out of it! Basing their behavior on this philosophy, they revert back to a lower existence instead of moving forward to the higher one, devolving instead of evolving.

So, in actual practice, the theory disproves itself. If you didn’t love yourself so much as you are, you would see, outlined by the light of principle, who it was that gave you that apelike inheritance and who it is that is presently making a jackass of you by accepting you just as you are.

Evil often seems good and beautiful to us because it supports us in the same ways it originally formed us.
