Such spheres envelop a star, using all the emitted energy for the civilization within. Point a telescope at it, you’ll see bupkes.
There won’t be any other light source near enough to reflect off of it.

A number of stars have been found with unusually high infrared levels relative to their visible brightness. A possible explanation is a partial Dyson Sphere/Swarm. A more likely one is dust clouds. Also possible is that they’re just like that, and there exists very rare stars with a naturally high degree of “contamination” of some sort. We’ll know better later, but for now it’s a very new thing which can only be seen with the James Webb telescope.

Okay, that’s cool.
But i will bet that the OP cannot support their claim in that manner.

Fun fact, but some people might argue that any civilization advanced enough to actually build a Dyson Sphere would have no actual need for one (the biggest pro of a DS is to maximize the energy absorption of a star’s total output). So building dozens of DS’ seems like a very inefficient use of resources and time.

Not saying that building a DS is impossible, but I just don’t think that anyone would bother to build so many…

Anyway, I admit I have fantasized/hypothesized that the “final evolution” of an advanced species could be uploading your entire civilization in immortal digital forms stored in a Matrioshka brain-type DS. But I’m still not acting like that is confirmed reality…

I remember that one, “Relics”, wasn’t it? Fun fact, but that plot line actually gets revisited in the MMO “Star Trek Online”.

Personally I always found it a wasted opportunity from ST not to revisit that in the show itself. You’d think that an intact DS would have immeasurable research potential for Starfleet for decades to come. At the very least Discovery S5 is bothering to put a close to another TNG episode with an abandoned (yet full-of-potential) plotline.

Off topic: The Dyson Sphere in that episode wouldn’t work under known physics. By default, “down” would be towards the star, so you’d need to counter that with some sort of gravity equal to the star’s pull plus the amount of surface gravity you desire, pulling outwards. Star Trek does have “gravity plating” in order to explain away why people don’t just float around the ship, but there’s no way to do that under known physics. (There are a few maybes, but the ship would still weigh as much as a planet.) I *think* if you had gravity plating in all directions pulling away from the star, it would be a stable arrangement (not 100% certain on that though) though it would make the star at least a bit bigger and puffier, which would probably be both good and bad. If I’m wrong and it wouldn’t be stable, then there are ways of stabilizing it so that the shell and the star don’t gradually drift into each other.

There are a bunch of other issues, such as heat management (think Mercury during the daytime, and it’s always daytime everywhere), but if you’ve got the means and motivation to build a shell around an entire star, they’re hardly insurmountable. I’m going to assume that whatever systems the builders had in place were self-maintaining over extreme timescales but eventually failed… and their far, far distant descendants had such an idyllic low-tech lives that they couldn’t be bothered to keep records how it all worked, so once things got bad enough their charred corpses fell into their sun. 😛

Without strong gravity plating or an equivalent, you’d have to live on the *outside* of the sphere, where it’s an eternal warm night and the heat comes from the ground rather than the sky. Or you could spin the shell extremely fast and live in a very narrow band around the equator, but at that point it’s just a ridiculously overbuilt Ringworld with all the issues of both a Ringworld and a Dyson Sphere.

My impression when learning about the possibility of such enhanced solar energy capture long ago was that it would likely be better to install large reflector shields and to focus their collective energy that could be used far enough... And that if someone ever managed to fully cover a star, it doesn't need to necessarily mean that people must live in/on it, the energy could be used for incredible engineering at a distance. In any case, we're in deep sci-fi and it's unlikely that any observation misconstrued as Dyson spheres really be that.

However, even if it was a good enough copy in a good enough framework so that it may end up "living", it'd still just be another copy, not really you, you'd still be "stuck in the meat", vs "stuck in the virtual meat" :) And of course, that parallel civilization, that might include a "being" believing to be you, would still need incredible energy to run... Meanwhile, we have a nice planet that's the very best solution for us, if only we could manage it a little better...

Although we can detect many dark objects from the effect of their gravity, this may still be giving a lot of faith to a notorious crackpot... Especially when there's evidence that this is political propaganda.
