Today, everything is political: education, money, food, sports, pets, healthcare, the weather, clothes, trees — you name it, it’s political. Why? Because the political Left controlled America for decades, that’s why. Leftists make everything political. Why? Because they’re angry, emotional, unhappy, creepy people with an axe to grind. “I didn’t ask to be born!” says the leftist. Really?? Too bad she wasn’t aborted. She went on to become a Senator. Lucky us.

I dunno about that. I mean, I’m sure I’m what this guy would call a “leftist”, and I don’t think anyone who knows me at all would ever describe me as inordinately angry or emotional or unhappy. Also, I don’t think “making everything political” is a new thing, or restricted to either left or right-wingers!

I think the whole “the left is trying to make everything political/is trying to force its ideology upon us/is angry and unhappy” is an unfortunately somewhat working try to use the growing frustration and disinterest with and in politics in general (carefully catered to by the right by the way) to the right’s advantage. People don’t have the energy anymore or the will to engage in politics, so by claiming they are the status quo, the rational calm ones, the ones who want to keep “politics” out of people’s lives is sadly something that many people like (even if, as should be obvious, none of these claims are true).
For many, “politics” is anything that upsets the cushy status quo they have been born in, so any progressive and most leftist policies are “political”, “ideological” and even “hysterical” for them and therefore seen in a negative light, while reactionary and conservative policies are just how things are and are therefore unfairly not associated with these traits.
I understand where this form of ignorance is coming from, but it is still very infuriating that people fall for this.
People who whine about “identity politics” are the ones who want to go back to the day when there were only two real political identities - “WASP” and “everyone else”. The former were heavily catered to by both liberal and conservative parties, the latter were thrown a bone every now and then to help keep them from revolting. Likewise, the media was fairly united in insuring that a WASP-specific information bubble existed. That’s not been practical or realistic for a very long time now; there are so many groups on both sides of the political spectrum with vastly different interests, and multiple information bubbles.
And even back then, the phrase “the personal is the political” existed.

Yep, you nailed it right on the head there! Maybe it’s just saying the same thing in different words, but I think when people like this say “don’t make so and so political” they really mean “don’t make this political in a way don’t like!”
Confused?
