What is it with religion and the weird sex-aversion? Violence gets either *meh* or an okay but sex is this weird taboo thing.
Now; I get that long ago, most diseases weren't curable, "microorganisms" weren't known and contraception was in it's infancy, so....perhaps sexual restriction was a matter of safety....
....however; People could easily have full-blown sex without penetration. Is there a LAW that says you MUST stick your penis in a lower bodily orifice and go in-and-out until orgasm ensues?
You could get the same effect by rubbing your sexy bits together....most of the sensitive stuff is outside anyway.
If humans were more sexually open (responsibly) I'll bet they would bee a lot less uptight and less prone to violence and rage.

It has been hypothesized that sex is so taboo in most religions because of two reasons:
1. It is something nearly everyone enjoys and wants. Therefore denying it via divine will gives any priest caste enormous power, since everyone sooner or later does it not out of the "proper reasons" (see 2.) and only they can give you absolution for this sin. And since no one wants to be a pariah but everyone has done some "sexual sinning" no one will argue against horrific punishments for "digressions" and the priests (which are celibate to deny others the same power over them) always have a reason to punish someone.
2. Most religions were originally tribal religions and a tribe needs to grow to have any chance of survival. Therefore every sexual act needs to be one with the goal of procreating. Everything that does not lead to a child (Masturbation, Homosexuality etc.) is therefore shunned as evil since it desn't help the tribe at all and "wastes" potential (and people in that age didn't know much about how conception actually works, so...).
