And by “the Ukrainian people” you mean the 90s-era kleptocratic oligarchs who would undoubtedly be put in place to run a Ukrainian rump state.

The True Ukrainian People are fighting for their lives, demonstrating the need for NATO more than ever. As Anon-e-moose pointed out, Sweden and Finland both joined NATO this year, after decades of neutrality, in direct response to Russia's unprovoked invasion. Putin's gambit has solidified Europe considerably.
