Surely it's obvious that both are bad things, but while rape is damaging for the individual woman, female employment is damaging to society as a whole. The reaction to that statement is emotional, not reasonable.

Emotion is the enemy of reason. Always was, always will be.

This is exactly the point. The claim is not that it's better that a woman be raped than that she work, but that the sum total of women working is worse for society than the sum total of rapes.

However, the claim is carefully crafted so that the reader goes blind with rage before she has time to consider what was being claimed, and will therefore provide entertainment.

I've wondered if people like Vox can actually be this fucked up. I mean this is a level that suggests a kind of massive dysfunction that makes me wonder if he could use a can opener without accidentally hurting himself.

I think the short answer he is, because people like him get stuck on an infinite loop of asshole. At some point a regular asshole starts basically challenging himself to be a bigger and bigger asshole, in rebellion against people that note he's an asshole. Its the same model where stupid people egg each other on, but inside one's own head, and exacerbated by the other assholes you attract.

Eventually you end up stuck in permanent asshole mode and that consumes what shreds of humanity you might have left. Your entire life is trolling the world and yourself to be a worse person, then believe every stupid thing you do as it reinforces asshole homeostasis.

I imagine future generations of internet anthropologists will wonder why he wasn't humanely institutionalized as he's clearly not a functioning member of society.

Wooohhooo, Vox mentioned Scalzi directly, more money for every charity that Vox hates! We should all collectively encourage Vox to keep this up.

For those of you not in the loop John Scalzi, the current President of the SciFi Writers Guild, has been a frequent target of Vox/Beale over the last year, and in early February he promised to give money to RAINN, Emily's List, HRC, and the NAACP every time that "Racist, sexist, homophobic dipshit" (RSHDS for short) references him directly or indirectly. A bunch of his fans and allies chipped in and last I heard there is over 60K pledged to the cause.

Inevitably, a man like this will send a wife out to work so she can turn over her entire paycheck to him while he develops his genius, makes her get an abortion if a pregnancy looks like interfering with her ability to support him, then divorces her for a more upscale model when he has developed said alleged genius. She's supposed to serve her man, after all, and he would never besmirch all that lovely, self- abnegating femininity by leaving her so much as a used car for her trouble. What is so disgustingly unfeminine is when she wants to earn a living or determine her fertility for herself. Such an uppity cunt should be put in her place by being raped until she bows down to King Phallus.

This is exactly the point. The claim is not that it's better that a woman be raped than that she work, but that the sum total of women working is worse for society than the sum total of rapes.

Since keeping women out of the workforce will severely damage our entire economy by effectively removing the labor and productivity women currently provide from it, his argument falls apart.

However, the claim is carefully crafted so that the reader goes blind with rage before she has time to consider what was being claimed, and will therefore provide entertainment.

In other words, it has no point other than to infuriate the reader, showcase Beale's loathing for Scalzi and provide masturbatory fodder for RWAs and MRAs while he runs for Scalzi's position as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Gotcha.
