(in regards to the state bill in Florida)
"We're not talking about religion, we're talking about the right to critically analyze evolution," she said.
I think the teachers and students should be able to critically analyze any topic studied in class. It teaches the kids to better analyze a situation and think for themselves. And lord knows they need it.
Besides evolution is still a theory and will probably remain that way. After all it does not explain how life started in the first place. Maybe there was an intelligent designer who kicked it off. Maybe an alien nation started it off. But I guess that's no more of a stretch than saying God started it all. Something started it right. According to the laws of physics things don't just appear magically by themselves.
Think about it.

I'm all in favor of requiring fundies to examine evolution critically . If they applied some real study and truly critical thinking to the subject instead of just parrotting the strawman-arguments of their pastors, we wouldn't keep hearing and reading idiotic statements about things "magically appearing by themselves."
Exactly. If students are taught to critically examine evolution, they will see that it provides a thoroughly reasonable explanation for the diversity of species on Earth. They may even find a way to improve it!
I fail to see how they will come to the conclusion of "God did it; it was magic" without leading teachers' propaganda.
Repeatedly saying "It's just a theory,", in the same tone of voice as one might say "It's a filthy lie!", does not constitute critical analysis.
"I think the teachers and students should be able to critically analyze any topic studied in class. It teaches the kids to better analyze a situation and think for themselves. And lord knows they need it."
Amen, sister!
"Besides evolution is still a theory and will probably remain that way"
Uggghhh...
Yet, when christianity is critically analyzed, we get accused of "persecution", or having an "agenda."
Feel free to critically analyze science. Just remember that science =/= supernatural.
"We're not talking about religion, we're talking about the right to critically analyze evolution"
The bill wouldn't exist without religion, so religion is central to the debate. You lie. And while we're on the subject, lets critically analyse your ID myth.
"After all it does not explain how life started in the first place. "
Where did god come from?
"According to the laws of physics things don't just appear magically by themselves."
So that rules out your mythological creator.
"After all it does not explain how life started in the first place."
It's not, nor was it ever, supposed to.
1. Once you actually critically analyze intelligent design you will find that it goes beyond mere theistic evolution into the realm of bullshit.
2. Once again, theory in the scientific sense is different from theory in the Scooby-Doo sense.
3. Evolution is not meant to explain the ultimate origins of life. And evolution=/=physics.
Maybe there was an intelligent designer who kicked it off. Maybe an alien nation started it off.
Gene Roddenberry already did this plot line in "The Next Generation". Aliens dropping some of their DNA into primordial worlds, seeding them so to speak.
So, steal someone else's plot line, ok?
"I think the teachers and students should be able to critically analyze any topic studied in class."
I agree completely. Whenever religion is brought up in class, teachers and students should be able to critically analyze it. After all, shouldn't we teach the controversy?
And we should indeed critically analyze ALL scientific theories and their proof.
And we do.
And Intelligent Design should not be a part of it because it is a stupid theory and there is currently no evidence for it at all.
"Besides evolution is still a theory and will probably remain that way."
Indeed, since we have all the evidence. Your 'theory' is more like a hypothesis, a conclusion looking for evidence.
Do you feel the same way about critically analyzing plate techtonics, or economic theory, or maybe Christianity? No, then your a hypocrite as well as a lying sack of shit.
"Besides evolution is still a theory and will probably remain that way."
Yep, just like gravity.
"According to the laws of physics things don't just appear magically by themselves."
Actually the laws of physics do allow the spontaneous creation of matter - so long as the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle isn't violated. ie energy/matter can appear for a very short amount of time the more matter the less time
but then the overall energy of the universe is estimated to be 0 - so infinite time
According to the laws of physics things don't just appear magically by themselves.
...therefore things magically appeared when God spoke them into existence, right?
Current laws of physics are extremely theoretic, even more than evolution, because current laws of physics don't seem to apply in very small and very big scales, but in normal life they work well
"Think about it."
Yes, please do.
Hey dumbass: If it is improbable for life to just exist by itself, and that has to have a cause, where does God come from? And where does the creator of the creator come from? Where does the chain end, on your same "thought?"
I'm thinking...
Theory does not mean what you think it means, not in scientific language. Evolution is not meant to explain how life started, it is a description or explanation of how life changes to adapt to the changing environment.
Yup, kids really need to learn to analyze and think for themselves, before anyone pushes any belief systems on them.
This is not fundie-stuff at all. Granted, he doesn't know much and it shows, but he's open to critically analyze things like he said, and that's definately a good thing. He might learn something in the way, too. So, meh.

There is just something extremely ironic about the number of fundies who say "think about it".
Although I do agree that critical analysis and thinking are skills kids should master.
My thoughts exactly. These are the very same people who want students to study by rote, parrot fashion. Critical thinking is the very last thing that they want, unless it just happens to be against Evolution. Even then it would be led towards Idiot Design, with no thinking actually allowed.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
