The Azusa Street Revival of 1906 was not the restoration of biblical Pentecost; it was the arrival of a counterfeit spirit that taught professing Christians to mistake confusion for the Holy Ghost, unintelligible babbling for the biblical gift of tongues, and emotional frenzy for the power of God. Pentecost in Acts 2 produced recognizable human languages, apostolic preaching and thousands of Jewish hearers confronted with the truth about Jesus Christ. Azusa produced trances, shaking, falling, unverifiable prophecies and alleged “heavenly languages” that could not withstand examination. It shifted the believer’s attention away from the finished work of Jesus Christ and the authority of the written word of God, conditioning spiritually hungry but doctrinally ungrounded people to believe that any sufficiently powerful experience must have come from Heaven.

The satanic genius of Azusa Street was that it did not openly reject Christianity—it counterfeited it. Another spirit entered using the names of Jesus, Pentecost and the Holy Ghost, and from that polluted fountain flowed the modern Charismatic movement, theatrical faith healers, prosperity preachers, false apostles, female prophets, holy laughter, deliverance ministries and the New Apostolic Reformation. Azusa trained generations to judge doctrine by manifestations when the Bible commands us to judge manifestations by doctrine. That deception is preparing the professing Church for the supernatural religion of Antichrist, when Satan will produce “all power and signs and lying wonders.” The strange fire kindled at 312 Azusa Street continues to burn today, and millions are calling it revival because they have abandoned the Book that would expose the spirit behind it.
