China invades its own province? China has been reiterating many times that it wants to solve the Taiwan problem peacefully or leave it to the next generation who will be smarter. But please don't provoke China by western leaders keep visiting Taiwan. Taiwanese are not pieces on your chess board!

Yeah, I’m sure the local residents would support joining the PRC, especially given a large part of the population has ancestors who fled to Taiwan on 1949.

OK then. Ask the Taiwanese what their thoughts are about PRC membership in a poll/census.

There are US military bases here in Britain. Considering the contribution to the local economies in & around such, I’d say the people would say ‘No’ to their leaving.

Now ask what people of which country Taiwan would like to have there: those of the PRC or USA?

China was making some progress towards convincing Taiwan to integrate at some level until China took control of Hong Kong. The brutality of that and the degree to which China just ignored their promises made the idea of integration totally untenable in Taiwan.

Taiwanese are not pieces on your chess board!

They're also not Chinese citizens--by their own choice, which should be respected.

I was born at the hospital at RAF South Ruislip, back when it was used by the USAF's Third Air Force. I was sorry to find out it had been demolished in 1995.
