I am hoping that the Taliban are truthful and willing to relax their rules a bit… even if it’s just down to the levels of other IslamoFrum holy roller countries (where women are still allowed to go to school and college and be medical professionals and such so they can serve other women and girls, thus not breaking the dopey sex-segregation rules).
I did come across an article about a school in Taliban territory where daughters of Taliban actually attended.
The Taliban are still a bunch of barbarian prudes who hate fun but some relaxation of rules would be acceptable. Again, Afghani society is VERY conservative and devout and the Taliban, as gross as they are, were often the only “government” that was actually competent and did their job. People were wiling to tolerate them if it meant having stability, make a living, etc.
For al their monstrousness, the Taliban would do what the regular Afghan government was too incompitent or unwilling to do.
This likely also explains why the Afghan military did bupkus when the Taliban started marauding all over the country… they were not cared for by the regular govt. and saw no sense in fighting for it and they knew that the Taliban were more competent despite their prudery and brutality.
The Taliban also LOATHE DAESH and have a bit of “Even Evil Has Standards” (even if the Taliban sees themselves as the ‘good guys’).
The one big point of contention with the Taliban was how they treated women & girls. That’s the main thing that make them scary. However, if the Taliban is willing to relax or modify the rules with over 50% of the human species then it’s a good start. They’re still restrictive but their previous treatment was insane even by IslamoFundie standards.
Let women and girls have schooling and allow them to have careers that cater to other gals. They can still stay true to their strict gender-separation rules but the gals at least have something more to do with their lives and society other than be imprisoned in their homes all day as a humanoid household appliance in a niqab.
Women and girls needs medical care and other personal needs. They also need to buy clothes, underwear, buy groceries, etc. and men can’t always be around 24/7. Also, there’s widows. Women need autonomy, even in a heavily-patriarchal culture.
Finally, the Taliban can be reasoned with and have been involved in various negotiations and other agreements. If one made an agreement with them and showed how something could benefit both sides, they’ll listen.
Again, the Taliban are still scary guys but they also have some good aspects despite the awfulness and they’re also actually a bunch of groups. The Taliban isn’t one monolithic group made up of the same guys since the days of the Soviet invasion. I don’t want to sugarcoat too much but I also try to see the big picture, silver linings, be pragmatic, etc.
That said, they’re still scary guys and I do hope for the more Progressive Afghanis to be able to escape as well as the folks evacuating now.
