The best way to reduce police brutality is to obey the police.
The amount of people who screams "my rights" or "police should be trained to not use deadly force" forget one thing: policemen are also people whose first instinct is to survive.

Honestly, If you're guilty, I don't Care what happens to you If you disobey the police. You could steal just a gum, If you run or don't surrender when ordered you deserve everything that might happen to you.

Now, If you're innocent and the police is not being corrupt, you still must obey every command because the police is investigating a crime and most likely only have broad descriptions to follow. What are they supposed to do? Not go after suspects? Yes, It sucks, but they must do proper investigation.

And If they are being corrupt, aside from signing a false confession, you still comply every other command. If they are being evil, all they need os the littlest excuse to fuck you up, so obey, Go to the police station get in contact with a lawyer or family member and only then you try to seek justice. Throwing a tanturn while being falsely arrested Will only harm you more.

So basically, you’re saying to ignore the rights given by the Constitution & federal law, that it’s okay for police to ignore them, and that if one is being oppressed by corrupt authorities, that the best thing to do is to comply and let them get away with it?

There’s kind of an issue in that a lot of police decide a person is inherently threatening rather than actually presenting threatening behaviour and assume that if they are physically capable of so much as craning their neck they will use that movement to launch an assault at any moment, (sometimes even that much freedom of movement is not required and they can be on the ground, asleep, or in the middle of a debilitating stroke and still be treated as an active threat that must be put down before anything else,) escalate a situation beyond all sense engaging in dangerous physical confrontation with no provocation whatsoever, and then in the aftermath work backwards to justify that escalation. And then people take the involvement of the police as all the evidence needed that whatever they did was justified by default.

But this escalation - and the reaction to that escalation - is often subject to a perception bias that defies all reason. The difference between how people reacted to Cliven Bundy’s armed standoff with police and their excusing his decade of breaking the law with illegal grazing, arson, trespassing, assault, etc. insisting that he had rights that needed defending regardless and that police were being unreasonable by being there at all and the shooting deaths of more young black men than I can bear to think about is stark indeed. When the justifications for the latter start by seriously questioning what those men were doing in places open to the public as though this in itself was criminal any reasonable person would have to call bullshit but somehow not only does this fly but so much as a noise violation becomes grounds for entirely revoking someone’s rights on the spot and retroactive justifications become routine.

And then you get into the contradictory “should haves” that are inevitable. For example some people (and Sean Hannity) say if you’re carrying a gun you should tell the police and even show them the gun because just catching sight of a holster has been enough justification for police to start shooting and not telling them is actively “hiding” your gun and "suggests” violent intent. But Philando Castile got as far as telling the officer he had a gun before being shot repeatedly. And actually flashing a gun at officers? Just adjusting your shirt can get you shot because you “might” have a gun. Some people only get as far as opening their mouths before having violence visited upon them for talking out of turn, which is also then somehow justified as was the case for a man trying to show his autistic charge how to comply with police. The same thing that is taken as “compliance” is also “resisting” at the same time depending how something needs to be justified. There’s literally no winning. Action and inaction are taken as justifications.

Speaking of the man shot for trying to save the life of his autistic charge who was playing with a toy truck in the middle of the road while police were evidently training guns on him about to shoot the treatment of people with mental illnesses or handicaps who might not even be able to understand the situation is equally grim and excused just as fast.

And then on the other end of the scale there’s the even more infuriating differences in treatment when you get to the rich and famous. A poor man could be told to shut up for complaining that police blew the front doors off his house to execute a search warrant, parked a tank on his lawn, tossed flashbangs, menaced their family with assault rifles and generally treated it less like a police search and more like an assault on a terrorist stronghold… But if you’re rich you can demand an apology for police not calling ahead of time and asking when it’s convenient to stop in and look for anything incriminating.

And if all that was too long to bother reading just ponder basic fact that when you give people power without holding them accountable to their actions they will abuse it, and when their abuses are not merely tolerated but defended it will become so habitual that they genuinely forget what their original job was possibly degenerating to the point where they’re indistinguishable from organized crime running protection rackets and roughing up anyone who doesn’t bow and scrape to preserve their street cred and that just undermines the public trust and makes everyone generally less safe. Also it’s pretty stupid to pay what then becomes criminals to do crimes to you.

“Police Officer” is not the most dangerous profession. “Miner” is. The second most dangerous occupation is “Power Line Repair Technician”. Third is “Meat Packing Plant Operator”. Police don’t even make the top 10; even being a farmer or criminal lawyer is more dangerous than being a police officer. Allowing police officers excessive leeway in regards to self-defense doesn’t improve their personal safety (though it does increase their perception of personal safety); but it does increase the levels of violence inflicted on innocents and bystanders by both the police and criminals.

BEST example of this; the first time Jeffrey Epstien was charged (in 2009), he not only got 9 months for “illicit sex with a prostitute” (which was bullshit, ’cause it was easily shown to be more than one, and every girl was not only not a prostitute, but UNDERAGE), but he was allowed to show up for 8 hours of the typical 24 hour day most perps spent in jail; the 8 hours in which he got to sleep.
Yeah, you read that right; they let him leave every morning to go to work and come back at night to sleep in a private cell and classified that as “serving his time”…

If what I heard is right that wasn’t even most galling part of the deal and I do find it galling that his “work release” was basically using prison as a cheap motel with a personal television in his private wing of the county jail where the door to his cell wasn’t even locked and he could walk out at will after spending the day in his office when sex offenders are ineligible for work releases. As positively obscene as Epstein’s outright pampering was the most mind-blowing cock-slap to the face of justice is that it was somehow negotiated that blanket immunity was given to others in Epstein’s social circles who were implicated in trafficking but not named or investigated. It’s like the opposite of turning state’s evidence but he got an even better payout and fewer restrictions to his lifestyle.

Go ask black people about how they know the police act around them. Or just follow Black Twitter.

All these people tried to obey the police. The police told them to stop being black (well, not out loud, but it was implied).

Police officers should be trained to DE-ESCALATE a dangerous situation. That instinct; fight or flight, is what they need to train away, at lest to some extent.

Stealing a gum doesn’t make you an outlaw, deserving of death. We live in the 21st century now, not in Medieval times. If you like “eye for an eye”, there might be some Middle Eastern countries that are still more or less medieval; why not move there?

People DO surrender, people DO lay down, or raise their arms above their heads, or whatever they are asked. People are still shot, suffocated, beaten…

The problem is that sometimes, the “description” the police have is “a crime has occurred” and the “investigation” they do is “there’s a black man; must be him”.

You have to survive the initial contact with the corrupt police officer, in order to be able to contact a lawyer. Philando Castile and Trayvon Martin weren’t given that chance.

I watched the special on Epstein and his crimes with my mother the other day, and I noted to her “The reason that Epstein got such a sweetheart deal is because he had Alan Dershowitz as his lawyer, and the government prosecutor who was tasked with handing this case, Alex Acosta, traded a sweetheart deal with Epstein in exchange for Dershowitz using his Republican Party connections to get Acosta fast-tracked; it’s not a coincidence that only 6 years after that deal, Acosta became Secretary of Labor for Donald Trump”.
And then the entire deal was voided, because it turns out Acosta was SO determined to make this deal, he didn’t bother to do it LEGALLY…

Going to admit that I disagree. I believe that when you murder, you have forfeited all rights.

Now, I still think that inmates who have been convicted of murder should still be given those basic human rights, because of the chance that the verdict was wrong and they’re not guilty. This is the same reason I’m against the death penalty; the only reason, to be honest.

But that’s not the case for Breivik. Not only is there overwhelming evidence, he’s confessed, multiple times, in ways that show his confession was not forced. So I would be totally fine with him having no rights whatsoever.
