You know how there is thst gun nut argument that it would be impossible to remove all guns because someone who truly wants a gun will be able to get one illegally, so only the Bad Guys™ will have guns. Obviously, this is an obvious Nirvana Fallacy, and obviously, gun control would not only set a much higher barrier of entry into premediated mass murder, but also reduce crimes of passions, gun suicides (which are usually spur-of-the-moment suicides with a low chance of recurrence but a very high rate of success) and accidents. Furthermore, that is true about any form of undesirable behaviour, from undocumented immigration to tadultery to littering to murder, and yet, in all other regards, these very same people are fanatically “tough on crime”, even when the excessive force and stictness is demonstrably only making things worse (see: War on Drugs). Pondering this issue has led me to a disturbing, if sadly unsurprising, conclusion.
Republicans have no interest in prevention.
They follow a dark and disturbed mindset from the Bad Old Times when life was precarious, death was an everyday fact of life, losing some of your children before they reach five was expected and the only way people thought about causality was magical thinking. To them, laws are not rules that are instituted by society, whether for the common good or to the benefit of the ruling class, that can and should be rationally analysed and scrutinised, but rather unquestionable dictats that must be kept to maintain favour with God/Karma/Providence/etc. As such, there is no value in preventing murder - the only thing that matters is that the perpetrator (or at least someone) is punished. And purpose of this punishment is only secondarily about things such as deterrence or satisfying society’s thirst for vengeance, but mostly to comply with a metaphysical Justice, with the expected benefit of good fortune according to the Just World fantasy.
That is not to say that the Republicans, or at least the bulk of their voters, are all psychopaths who do not care if their children live or die in real life. However, they are extremely good at compartmentalisation, with a strong disconnect between the policies they support and their real world effects and always ready to rationalise and turn blind eyes. And that is all it takes.
