Not quite. There’s nothing in the constitution that says ALL citizens have the right to vote, which is why the 14th amendment has been supplemented by several addressing voting restrictions based on race (15th), sex (19th), ability to pay (24th) and age (26th).

Republicans love voter ID laws because they make it harder for poor people, mostly minorities, to vote.

Example: few years ago Alabama (of course) passed a law requiring state-issued ID to vote.

Next year they shut down most of the state offices that issued those IDs - and every one juuuuuuuust happened to be in a majority-Black district. Offices in wealthier white districts all stayed open.

I actually read some of that (the synopsis), and they’re just making all the usual homophobic fundie points that are either PRATTs or non sequiturs or strawmen, or whatever. Like (to paraphrase) “if you approve of homosexual relationships or polyamory, you also have to approve of sexual relationships between parents and children or between siblings” and so forth. They even went with the “if everyone was gay, there’d be no children, so humans would die off” bit, which is nonsense on several different levels.

I am guessing people have made this point before, but I just had the thought…shouldn’t the 14th Amendment have made the 19th unnecessary? “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States;”

Voter ID becoming compulsory in recent years. I presented my passport on July 4th last year before I was given a voting slip which I placed - after voting Labour - into the ballot box. Which I did just after the stroke of 7AM when that Polling Station opened. What happened soon after voting closed at 10PM.

And considering how Labour = Democrats, why didn’t Labour fight about such just 24 hours before Starmergeddon happened? Especially as that party wasn’t in power up to last year. And what happened recently in Australia.

Not taking into account how the equivalent of the Democrats won there: certainly that outside of that country directly responsible for the equivalent of the Republicans in Australia losing why do you fight so hard against compulsory voting…?!

As I’ve always voted since I turned 18, therefore compulsory voting in Britain wouldn’t affect me in the slightest. In fact, I’d welcome it.

(*)Ever since I was a teen. Feeling very out of place at school due to my initially-undiagnosed aspergers and such really did a number on my psyche.

I remember when medically assisted suicide became legal in Canada and a bunch of “moral” trolls took to helplines pushing it harder than an American doctor pushing questionably useful medications after a particularly lavish lobbyist visit as a gesture of their self righteous disgust. It never occurred to them their “protest” of something they saw as immoral and disregard for the seriousness of their positions to engage in this trolling would have real and fatal consequences ranging from pushing a hopeless person to suicide to pushing entire communities that need help to never again trust an organization that promises the help they need. The damage spread even further than that, a distressing number of people are utterly convinced aggressively pushing people to suicide is an actual government policy and not the actions of trolls.
