What he did was establish that the particular claim that sunlight caused maggots was a myth. He did not experiment to disprove every possible hypothesis.
And they have ranges of the estimated time.
They don’t have a firm idea of how, so they cannot explain the reason.
But, you know, details can come later.
And most of all, this is cosmology, not atheism.
