Orwell was right to criticise Stalin and USSR as they were quite corrupt and Stalin had policies that fucked Russia up for years

Yes, the Soviets fought the Nazis… because there was not enough place for two Evil Overlords on this continent. And they fought this war very inhumanely with complete complete for life, be it that of the enemy or that of their own people, to the point they literally had troops dedicated to standing in the rear ready to shoot any soldier trying to flee.
