After events like the recent devastating hurricane in North Carolina, many people wonder “why did God create a world with so much death and suffering?”

Well the short answer is, we can’t look at this broken, fallen creation to understand what the original perfect creation was like. We are living in this fallen world. We’ve never experienced a perfect one, only Adam and Eve did. But this world isn’t the one God made—it’s a broken version of God’s “very good” creation.

We need to look to God’s Word to understand why the present world is the way it is—and that means understanding the literal history in Genesis 1-11 concerning the perfect creation, marred by sin and being judged with death and the curse.

We now live in a groaning world (Romans 8:22) and it’s not God’s fault, it’s our fault as our sin in Adam caused these problems.

Well, not PERFECT. If you baby-proof your house, and your kid manages to hurt himself badly, your baby-proofing was insufficient.
If the world was perfect, two idiots who didn’t even understand right and wrong could not have FORCED hurricanes into it by accident. And note that god didn’t lift a finger to alleviate any suffering from earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, mudslides, melting ice cream, etc. In fact, he went and adapted carnivores to kill, when Death entered the world. Made snakes and spiders venemous. Changed insectivores to eat bugs… He didn’t just passively watch the danger, he made the danger.
You just don’t want to blame your skyfairy for anything bad. But, really, there’s no one else TO blame.

the literal history in Genesis 1-11

Will there ever come anyone who talks about the literal history in the Harry Potter books?

How can perfect creations disobey and break that perfection? The snake would have failed to tempt them if they were perfect.

So, in short, it’s our own fault that our creator torments us for an eternity for having created the first of us imperfectly…

It's this sort of thinking that made me an atheist.

They’ll hopefully do better on realizing (a) omnipotence and omnibenevolence just aren’t compatible (what with the latter implying respect for Agency, and the former necessarily precluding it, even if not really in the same way Fate does/would), and (b) El is far better understood as suprapotent than omnipotent, certainly in the Old Testament. Omnipotence var. Christianity is more from Zoroastrianism, Platon, and (I think) Epikouros than anything in the Tanakh.

How can it be “God’s fault” if “He” lacks the ability to influence our world? Except in the human imagination, the reason you’re citing ancient mythology? What evidence is there of ancient perfect humans? I don’t mean claims in books, but evidence. You then claim that the problems of the world could somehow be fixed by the belief in ancient-perfection? How does that help, since it distracts from the actual causes of current suffering that we could address with more direct means? Like the progress in medicine, for instance. I see no evidence that such progress is due to faith in ancient mythology. But there seems to be evidence of people alienated from reality and rejecting even proper medicine, because of irrational beliefs similar to those of an ancient people ignorant of the world.

That the “God” that you believe in isn’t real. Or, at least, isn’t anybody I’d consider worthy of worshipping if he were!

How perfect can it have been if eating a fruit was all it took to break it?
