Can the magistrate pass laws that change an idolater's heart and cause him to accept Christ? No. The church preaches the gospel, which is powerful to save.
Can the magistrate pass laws that prevent idolaters from publicly honoring false gods? Yes. It would be good for society

Can the magistrate pass laws
I’ll stop ya right there, and say NO. Magistrates are essentially judges or something like it depending on where you’re from, so, no, that’s just not what they do.
laws that prevent idolaters from publicly honoring false gods?
Well, as an atheist, ALL gods are false in my opinion, especially YHWH/El/Jehova/Yahweh/Allah/etc. So I wouldn’t be necessarily opposed to that. Of course, that’s probably not what you idiot means, but frankly I don’t care. If you’re too dumb/too up your own ass to realize how that vague wording could backfire, it’s on you.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion
And when even the SCOTUS upholds that part of what ensures their existence: the US Constitution, the only possible way you’ll be able to get what you want is to make the film “Olympus Has Fallen” a documentary.
When a fictional film scenario - “World War Z” - has a scene where the actual US Constitution is being saved from the oncoming Zombie Apocalypse, good luck in making the former factual, (P)Rick.
After all: why is that scene in the latter…?!

Forty Two years ago, i sat in my first Political Correctness class. It was an attempt to make people aware of how careless word choice could harm.
People have since taken PC up as a club and used it to harm. YOU CAN’T SAY THAT! cries the Karen. If it was legislated, then people would be calling the cops on dirty jokes, words, nicknames, and accidental memes.
For most of my life, i’ve been hearing people claim that all sorts of things are being treated like religion. If you make false religions illegal, then the same people that are so vocal about PC and about the PTA rules and HOA rules are going to try to call teh cops about sportsball, movie stars, any water-cooler discussion of last night’s miniseries, and anything else that the weak have a chance to flex their power on.
Yeah, sure, and the definition of what’s a true religion didn’t cause actual wars, right? For exemple, good luck with having Catholics, Lutherans and Calvinists converge on a common definition even today, much less in the 16th century.

Maybe he meant magistrate in the Roman sense, i.e. a major civil servant.
Confused?
