Can somebody please tell me why governments around the world constantly and consistently fail to show off when international cooperation and trust in science was actually fundamental in stopping a global problem? At this point it is almost like they are doing this on purpose! Or at the very least their education systems fail in teaching that.
Hey idiot, these things (for the most part) didn’t happen not because science was wrong all the time, but because we actually acknowledged the problem and did something against it! People like you were against each and every one of these solutions too by the way for “restricting your freedoms” or crap like that. When the first seat belts were introduced people like you railed against it, when being drunk while driving was prohibited you lot screamed about governmental overreach, yet these policies were very much effective in reducing car accidents and deaths caused by them, and nowadays no one says anything about them anymore. So shut the hell up and listen:
“Oil gone in 10 years”
I guess this could reference the Club of Rome statements? Yeah they were working with the data at the time. You all are very lucky that new oil fields were discovered after that. The main fact (oil being a limited resource, and that the CO2 we release by using it is ultimately bad for us and the climate) remains!
“Another ice age in 10 years”
Oh yeah, and Darwin recanted on his death bed and converted to creationism. There are just some stories people who are against scientific findings love to tell again and again which are patently false, just because it makes them feel good about themselves. No, aside from some small minority opinions, no one seriously considered a new ice age to start. The danger of the gulf stream stopping and Europe getting way colder is still out there, no one is sure about how imminent that change is though.
“Acid rain will destroy crops in 10 years”
Ever heard of catalytic converters? You know, the stuff we made car producers add to the cars so they don’t pump certain noxious gases into the air as much as before? Based on the scientific findings that we made that these gases caused acid rain?
Oh and as an aside: At around the same time the danger of lead-additives in fuels was also discovered. Turns out they are aggressive neuro-degenerative toxins, who knew? Crime rates started to drop after we removed them from the fuels too, strange, isn’t it? Oh and we also found out that asbestos is a highly dangerous substance as well and did something against it! All because of that stupid alarmist science, what about your freedom to breathe in toxic gases?
“The ozone layer will be destroyed in 10 years”
Look, I understand that it’s difficult to keep up with recent history, but the fact is that the ozone layer was SEVERELY damaged already when scientists figured out that a group of chemicals in wide use (CFCs) were the reason for it. There was resistance against a total global ban of them, but ultimately rational minds prevailed and we stopped producing and using them worldwide. And the ozone layer started to regenerate again! What a coincidence! Almost as if listening to science and working together, even if it means short-term negative economic consequences, ultimately benefits us all.
“The ice caps will be gone in 10 years”
Well… the arctic ones pretty much are on their way towards it. But I fear more for the antarctic ones. It might take longer for various reasons, but they are both diminishing at a rapid rate. Glaciers have been shrinking for decades now. The water levels ARE rising! These are easily observed facts, stating it as if they weren’t just makes you look like a delusional fool (which is what you are to be fair).
So yeah, not one point of yours stands up under scrutiny. I’m not shocked at all.
