The German Soldier of WWII, to the Bitter End: the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen

I distinctly remember seeing a meme where somebody said this exact thing about the Confederacy, and the top comment pointed out they fought one war - one they started for a supremely stupid reason - and lost badly. And the Nazis similarly lost the war they started, by the end the now-mostly-bewildered-conscripts that made up what was left of the bulk of the German army surrendering in droves because after opening up another front in Russia in defiance of all sense when already facing imminent defeat they were otherwise guaranteed a horrible and pointless death. Also one guy kicked the occupying German army out of Zwolle in the course of one crazy ass night so… there’s that to chew on.

Leo Major. Read that guy’s biography and you’ll quickly swear they’ve got to be taking the piss but he’s real.
Short of it is on the nigh of 13 April, 1945 Private Leo Major was supposed to run recon with friend and fellow sniper Corporal Wilfrid “Welly” Arsenault and get in touch with the Dutch resistance in the town of Zwolle. Unfortunately they were spotted by a machinegun nest on their approach and Corporal Arsenault was killed. Major survived and cleared the nest, and decided to change his mission from recon to revenge.
He tore up the machinegun - which under normal circumstances required a small team to effectively transport and operate - and sprinted to every known SS outpost firing wildly and burning places to the ground briefly catching his breath in resistance safehouses in between brazen suicidal charges. So many attacks, so many shots fired, so much fire and chaos in such short span had the occupiers thinking they were under a full blown assault by superior numbers and without intel or leadership (Leo started his rampage at the SS headquarters) a retreat was called. By morning every German outpost was abandoned or on fire and the retreating forces weren’t stopping to look back in case they were being followed.
Despite this busy night Private Major had one last thing to do before he could let himself pass out from exhaustion: He made arrangements with the very shocked and very grateful resistance to have Corporal Arsenault’s body returned home. There was a bit of a hiccup on that end, the car the Dutch sent his remains in was fired upon when it approached the Canadian outpost. Kind of puts a real record scratch on the end of that story.
Well now, let's see if they thought so.

…meanwhile, all those of the Wehrmacht sometime post-Operation Overlord who had - or knew someone who had - a simple but lifesaving piece of equipment which saved them from the oncoming Soviet storm of vengeance:
A compass doesn’t lie.
Unlike you, when you fail to realise that in travelling West they would be guaranteed to find US or British/Commonwealth forces.
And surrender to them.
Confused?
