Likely that before any suspect was identified and investigated, some considered plausible that it would be the far-right:
- Statistics
- The culture of gun mania and conspiracy theories, of eshewing mental health services, of radicalization and segregation
- If someone with previous police or army experience, statistics also point at the right
- The most extreme complained that Kirk was not extremist enough, similarly to how the GOP is increasingly purged of moderates
- Unless a better motive was found, those with a plausible motive are the far-right (martyrdom, calls for war like the above, for instance)... And evidence shows that even if it's one of them, they will still push disinformation and scapegoat instead of addressing the actual problem and causes. A post-truth cabal only needs lies and justifications to oppress society.
On the other hand, lone wolf terrorism was possible from any political or religious perspective too: while the above MAGA misconstrue everything as opinion and speech (Kirk's campus harassment was not academic either, of course), they (like Kirk did) advocate for, or support, policies that actually result in harm and death. Including against innocents, that they promote a mythology about, with even the potential for crimes against humanity. When security and justice are no longer provided by an abusive state, the people lose confidence. Then if in the future Trump's regime proves to illegally cling to power like was previously attempted, one could expect their apparent civil war or revolution fantasies to really manifest...
I forgot to include the tag #transphobia but one of the quotes is a good sample of hate speech against not only the transgender people but against their parents and society for not suppressing them. Of course, the claim that parents and medical providers castrate children is old bullshit for panic and to promote oppressive policies.
Some of the above crackpots are notorious for having promoted QAnon, even vampirism conspiracy theories. I think that all of them support the Big Lie. That's not normal politics.
