The show M.A.S.K has no political pretense at all. It's about a bunch of well-meaning scientists from different backgrounds against a criminal organization that obtains money robbery, extortion, counterfeiting, kidnapping, or attempting to steal historical artifacts.

Now you COULD make a bunch about the lack of diversity on the team or that it's ableist because non of them have severe speech impediments or the fact that it's based on Nevada (in AMERICA...hisss!) or that the safety tips only take into account people in middle class economic brackets or the very contemporary notion that crime is never REALLY crime is the correct people do it...

No. No one sane does this.
The villains are called V.E.N.O.M. an acronym for 'VICIOUS EVIL NETWORK OF MAYHEM'
We are not doing things by halves here.

But you can't make this claim of general universal interest and escapism with anything nowadays.

You can't have a non-white in the cast without them going on extended rants about inequality specific to the supposed mores of the very political climate of now. You can't have a white character without them being evil, stupid, or submissive. You can't have a villain without them either being misunderstood or some variation of the old bugbears of specially far left liberalism...which means they are beyond all saving. After all, the man might have lied, cheated, tortured and murdered people...but he didn't use a MICRO-AGGRESSION!

You can't separate politics from BAD writing.

The tale of mankind's hubris leading to the rise of Godzilla is a universal tale. A bunch of races who once fought together to defeat a dark lord banding together is a universal tale. A man arriving from another planet and adopting his new home as a place he wants to use his abilities to do good? Universal.

What is NOT universal is thinly veiled very contemporary political shots, endless reiterations of 'the ____ experience' which never shifts in tone or tale. What's a 'refugee' experience? ALWAYS a hopeless put-upon saint looking for a decent existence being stalked by villainous racist ICE parodies. Every...single...time. Is this the only possible refugee experience in reality? Not at all.
But it's the only story that Hollywood can tell.
