Many,many indigenous people have been horrifically abused and in extreme cases even killed in residential schools. Many of the survivors were scarred for life.

Another sci-fi show possibility (perhaps): On an alien-colonized Earth, the new non-human governments establish such residential schools for all human children.

They punished students for being literate in their native language or history. Your standards are that they were "ignorant" of what we told ourselves to justify our sense of superiority and needed to alter them to conform to our false narrative and erase all means of a reality check.

Try being kidnapped and dragged to a a hellish boarding school where you are treated like an animal and savagely beaten/starved for speaking your language or practicing your culture or for being born a "Savage" and see how friendly and well-adjusted you are.

Nobody attacked residential schools for their educative mission; rather, they point to the abuse and the cultural genocide.

Hell, the entire freaking point of the residential schools was cultural genocide. It was downright stated that it's mission was to "kill the Indian to 'save' the child", which explains why those schools were so abusive.

Not to mention the children there spent so much time being abused and being used for free labour that they didn't even end up learning much anyway (somuch for an education).

And the educational purpose of the electric chair was?
