“Some insights for people who think Hell is unreasonable?”
Oh, lay it on me, please.
“Ask yourself this question. Why don't we get mad at someone who steps on an ant, but we give 5-10 years in jail for someone who kills some dirty criminal, and life-in-jail (or death sentence) to someone who kills the president?”
We don’t get mad at people who break the law, but we do get mad at people who take the law into their own hands? This confuses you? How does this relate to Hell, though? To ‘infinite torture for finite sin’?
“In all three instances someone murdered. So why the different punishment.”
killing an ant isn’t murder.
Taking the life of a criminal is at least some benefit to society.
Taking the life of a president usually involves a significant amount of preparation. Not something you do in a blind rage or by accident.
“The only thing that changed in this scenario was the worth of the person/thing the crime was committed against.”
I would not say a criminal is worth less. But then, you’re conservative. if a cop kills someone on the street, you have to find some crime the victim committed that justifies his being slaughtered on the street.
“Wouldn't it then follow that crimes committed against an infinitely worthy person/thing would require an infinite punishment?”
No, that doesn’t follow at ALL.
If i steal $60 from a homeless person, that may be all the money they have to last them a month.
If i steal $60 from Elon Musk, he spends more money just flushing his toilet. I should be punished LESS for stealing a set amount from a person who’s worth infinitely more. I cannot possibly steal enough from him to change his life.
And I am only able to commit a finite amount of sin while alive. Infinite pointless torture is not punishment, and it’s not justifiable.
