The taxi driver just recovered, means he’d been infected for a while. Interesting. Of course, maybe his ancestors were from China, and suddenly the stupidity of this statement is super intelligent.
I even checked the source, and, well … American Renaissance is claiming that while they’re certainly nationalist, they are not bigoted, but the comments seem to run to several shades of “non-whites are various kinds of horrible” to suggested the mass infection of Africa.
Also looked it up, and, well … Coronavirus is not precisely new, it was in fact identified as the infection relating to SARS, and coronaviruses were actually discovered in the 1960s. The current strain is new, but, that’s to be expected from any virus. They mutate very quickly, so even 15 years from SARS is enough time for vast changes in the coronavirus genome.
And, as others have pointed out, originating in China means that yes, it’s most going to have infected Chinese people in it’s first several months. That’s why we have travel warnings, in order to try to prevent the spread outside China as much as possible by reducing traffic, and increasing awareness among those who still must go so they take better precautions.
