I really wish the Spy Kids would come back and do something about the escaped Thumb-Thumb that is Chuckles Kirk.
Even leaving aside the possibility of internalised racism, the USA has a profound problem with police brutality and police militarisation that is very clearly in large part rooted in racism*, especially in the form of White fears of retribution for Black slavery,* that certainly affects African-Americans especially, but definitively extends well beyond this specific area.
Also, were these policemen not punished relatively swiftly and uncontroversially? There may very well be racism at work here as well, in that the black crooked cops were not afforded, or at least to a lesser extent, the Blue Wall of Silemce that shields white crooked cops from facing punishment for their abuses.
* as well as classism (exacerbated by America’s continued hard embrace of unfettered Capitalism), which intersects very naturally with racism, and with a cultural identity around “the Frontier” that romanticises the hard and often violent life of a settler in a country that is expanding faster than its judicial and law enforcement system can keep up with, encroaching into the treasured homelands of other peoples whose societies it does not care to understand as long as it can get someone to sign a phony contract that can be used as a dodgy pretext for future aggressions while sweeping any own aggressions under the rug, which again ties back to racism
