Not in the theoretical sense (all men are created equal), but in practice? Absolutely! Slavery is actually written into our constitution in the 3 fifths clause.
Criminal law is racist!
Once again, in theory it’s not but in practice? Yes! POC are likely to get longer sentences for the same crimes. They are more likely to be put into the system at an early age for the same crimes white children commit.
Policing is racist!
POC are far more heavily policed than white people. It’s called the broken windows policy.
Arrests are racist!
When it’s POC getting arrested for the same things white people wouldn’t get arrested for? Yes, that’s racist.
Incarceration is racist!
When it’s POC being incarcerated for the same things white people wouldn’t be incarcerated for? Yes, that’s racist.
Standardized tests are racist!
Standardized tests are based on the “standards” of one dominant culture that not everyone lives in. So yes, racist, and ableist too.
Mortgages are racist!
When you can’t get one based on your skin color? Yeah, that’s racist. When you are arbitrarily charged higher interest because of your skin color? Yes, that’s racist. When you are told you can only live in a specific area of town, and they don’t offer mortgages for the kind of houses there? That’s racist.
