True, I may not be able to fully grasp what it’s like to be nonbinary. In fact, I find the concepts of transgender easier to grasp, but I digress. But if people truly think they are nonbinary, then who am I to tell them they’re in fact not?
Also, still find it ironic that they call “lies” a “satanic” thing when fundies tend to be the biggest liars there are.
Davy has posted more and more Christian whining lately.
He honestly does seem incredibly bothered that someone, somewhere does not care about the bible.
All words are made up. If they have an agreed on definition, that is what the word means. Even when it's contradictory or confusing. For example, unless you had context, you don't know if someone said "Jim is a bad mother fucker" was a good thing or not.
Excellent simple example of using a non-religious argument as an opening for religion. Starts with something non-religious that sounds like it could be argued. Wrong but something that could be argued about. Then, in only 4 lines, he ends up at the stupid end of Christianity. Making it clear his first line was just a distraction, an attempt to cover for bringing up his religious dogma.
If you pointed out that the term “nonbinary” is just “non-” plus “binary” and not everything comes in sets/groupings of two, they’d probably just respond that it’s fine to use it in a general sense, but human sex and/or gender is binary. And thus nonbinary in that sense is meaningless. I say “probably” because there do exist never-wrongs with severe black-and-white thinking who would reflexively deny that even if you gave some clear non-biological examples.
Reminds me of a conversation I had long ago… I think it was in 1990-ish, with someone insisting that “asexual” was a made-up word. He then clarified that he meant made-up when referring to human sexuality; humans don’t reproduce by budding or splitting, therefore they can’t be asexual. I tried to explain that words can have multiple meanings, at which point he responded that this particular usage is meaningless because it doesn’t describe anything real; everyone is attracted to someone, and lack of sexual desire isn’t a form of sexual attraction. (I was tempted to point out that leprechauns aren’t real yet we have a word for them, but that would have been practically conceding that asexuality is a myth.) The conversation was broken up shortly after that, so I’m not sure what other points I would have added to that at the time.
The real point with these kind of people isn’t that the word is “made up”, or even that the concept behind the word is “made up”, the problem is that people are (metaphorically) identifying as leprechauns, so it’s the *usage* of the word that’s “made up” in their eyes. They just express it in a clumsy “you know what I mean” manner because most of them haven’t really developed the language to state it in a way which is both clear and concise.
I’m mostly pointing this out because while saying “all words are made up” is fine if all someone is doing is making fun of them, using that as an actual argument to counter their ideas (which I’ve seen people try to do) is missing the point.
Either male or female… Hate to break your bubble, but even biologically, it is not absolutely true. A not insignificant number of people have genotypes which deviate from that simple dichotomy. Throw in some neurological development and the reassuring categories are just a somewhat accurate tale, so we keep it so as not to confuse the non-specialist public.
All words were made up at some point in time. Humans have this ability of symbolic thinking and giving names to symbols with definitions is part of human language. When we discover something in nature, we try to name it.
Hate and false witnessing for libel is not "of the devil"?
Hermaphrodites.
Your lies are made up.
The problem is we keep talking like gender is binary, except when people identify as something other then male/female. Gender isn’t binary! If you identify exclusively as male or female, you’re still literally non-binary. We just need to find a way to get that through the thick skulls of the phobics, without forcing Enbies to change what they call themselves (because there’s nothing wrong with a non-literal identifier, and everything wrong with dictating what people can call themselves.)
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
