There was an article in Life magazine about an infamous Southern sheriff. A society woman was raped by a black man. This sheriff arrested a white mentally challenged man. Why? He was only trying save the woman’s reputation, because it was socially more damaging to be raped by a black man than a white man. I don’t remember to much of the rest of the story. The white man was cleared of the charges, perhaps with the help of the rape survivor.
