China did a lot of “Nice country you have there. It would be terrible if something happened to it.” Less pure military conflict then the US but just as bad at forcing their policy on their neighbors.

Just ignore all those Uyghurs who aren’t allowed to speak their language, practice their religion, walk down the street without being under government surveillance, or quit their jobs!

They’re not “exploiting smaller countries”, they just give out cheap loans with a ton of loopholes that favor Chinese business, and don’t care about countries downstream when they operate their Mekong river dams…

Then why are they trying to establish military bases on atolls that barely break the surface of the ocean just to claim more territorial waters?

China is too authoritarian to be considered liberal. For example: the Uyghurs and the ongoing crackdown on Hong Kong.
