From Merriam-Webster:
sanctify
verb
sanc·ti·fy ˈsaŋ(k)-tə-ˌfī
sanctified; sanctifying
transitive verb
1
: to set apart to a sacred purpose or to religious use : consecrate
So, basically, marriage, at least in the US, was never “sanctified,” so it had no “sanctity" to begin with. Which is a good thing, really.
But yes, when they say “sanctity of marriage,” they really mean that they want to limit it to people who believe as they do.
