I was sure that the bullshit of the tobacco industry, that also inspired the bullshit of the oil industry, would resurface once in a while. When you confuse the left's public health concerns with the right's control doctrines for authoritarianism, there's a problem!
Just to share about my own experience, I knew people who died of lung and tongue cancer attributed to smoking. It was forbidden in the cult I was raised in, but I also smoked a few years as a young adult. I never liked the taste and smell of cigarettes and smoked out of nicotine addiction, but admit that the aroma of some cigars and pipe tobacco can be appealing. I stopped smoking twice, because I fell into it again when I had a new gf who used small aromatic cigars and I let myself be tempted: I was soon buying cigarettes again.
The second time I stopped I decided to remember forever how difficult and annoying it was. The first few weeks I was constantly hungry and thirsty, the first few months were very annoying, for several years, suddenly one night I'd feel an urge to smoke. Fortunately that's long over. It takes years for the brain's neuroreceptors to fully recover and until they do it can apparently affect mood.
But as a non-smoker, I also easily smell the awful stuff from far away, like getting in through my open window because of people smoking outside on their balcony. When I visit smokers, my hair and cloth stink. Some smokers who visit smell stronger than others, it varies from mild to awful.
Then where I live it's illegal in public places. I'm really glad, I remember when offices I worked in were full of smoke. If I ever was a smoker again, I'd agree to smoke outside, it'd be my own addiction problem, afterall.
Val Kilmer's recent death was due to complications of tobacco related throat and tongue cancer. As a Christian Scientist he was apparently initially in cancer denial, which delayed treatment.
Edit/Adding: Oh and as Keith said, it doesn't only pollute lungs and people, also the environment. It covers walls, penetrates mechanical and electronic equipment, the thrown out ashes, botches and filters also pollute beaches, yards, sidewalks and streets, end up in the water sources...
Edit/Adding: I've also seen pseudoscientific propaganda pretending that nicotine is not the main addictive substance, likely resurrected due to the vaping industry. Vaping is not harmless but does produce less pollutants and formulas with nicotine will maintain or create addiction, unless someone used a strict gradual reduction regime as a plan to stop. But then, there are patches for that, no need to inhale products of unknown quality (some cheaper products can be very toxic, the aromas also add pollutants, there can be accumulation of oily products in the lungs) and burn your mouth and throat (also increasing chances of cancer)...
